Book Discussion Thread

Thread Starter

We've talked about this idea a bit in other threads.  Shall we get it going?  Here's how I thought it might work, but please feel free to post different ideas.

We'll pick a book together.  Then we'll set a tentative date by which we strive to read the first few chapters (or whatever makes sense).  Then we'll start jumping in with comments, feelings, discussion, etc. on the reading during that time.  When we reach the deadline, then we set a new goal for another date and discussion that section.  Etc.  Obviously we can adjust as we go based on what's working/not working.

Suggestion for the first book are:

Connection Parenting

Playful Parenting

Love Language book (title?)

I vote for Connection Parenting b/c it's a short, quick read that references many other great books (like Playful Parenting) so it's a nice review of the literature and could help us decide what we'd like to read next.

Please jump in and let me know how you all would like this to proceed!

On going book suggestion list: please let me know if you'd like a book added to the suggestion list!

Connection Parenting

Playful Parenting

Love Language book (title?)

Non-violent Communication

Unconditional Parenting

Attached at the Heart

Raising Your Spirited Child

Siblings Without Rivalry

Sleepless in America

Nurture Shock

Spousenomics

Our babies, Ourselves

Simplicity Parenting

Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves

The Continuum Concept

Hold On to Your Kids

Crap, I can't get Connection Parenting from my local library.  Last time I borrowed it from our API chapter library, but that was in Austin, TX.  Sigh...   If you all have similar problems, then it would be better to choose a different book.

I'm reading Playful Parenting now, so I vote for that one.  I can get any book though.

I like you ideas, Jaimee. My library ( the one I just had time to check; I belong to two) has PP but not CP.

I was going to say earlier that I'd be willing to organize the book threads if you had too much going on. Either way is fine, though! Just let me know. smile.gif

Quick q before I grab Jasper who just woke up: my lib had two Playful books. Is it the one by Cohen?

Yes, the one by Cohen.  Amanda, it would be great (and fitting) for you to lead the book discussion threads!   Absolutely, please take over!  thumb.gif

I just requested both from the library, I'm in the holds queue for both, so I'll probably have both to read at the end of the month. I've read PP before, though, so I could get in on the discussion without the book if I had to.

It sounds like Playful Parenting is a good place to start. Who else is interested? I know it will take some people longer to get the book than others. Next time, we will choose the book before we finish discussing the first. That way, everyone has time to get it. For now, does starting to read in two weeks seem reasonable? Can everyone get a copy by then?

Yep, I just added it to my amazon cart. It's only $10 on amazon, score! :)

I have a couple books in my reading queue that I could throw out there for future reading if anyone is interested.... Our babies, Ourselves and Simplicity Parenting.

Cool, Christina! I prefer to use the library so I don't have to pay (my libraries have ebooks!!). But I may try to get a used copy so I can highlight. I love marking up books that I'll want to come back to.

I added them to the list above.  I've wanted to read Our Babies, Ourselves for a while

I started it when Rhyko was small and slept all the time, but I think I only got half way. The first half is excellent, though!!! thumb.gif

Is it safe to assume that the 2001 edition of Playful Parenting is the same as the newer looking one on Amazon? My local libraries have the original where the cover looks a little different... but it seems like it's the same book. Maybe the picture on the website is different than in person at the library. Hmm. I'll go to the library and check it out! thumb.gif

ETA: It is the book by Cohen, btw.

I believe they are the same for the most part.  Perhaps a different introduction?  My library has both versions.

Yay, I checked out Playful Parenting at the library! And nevermind my previous post... It looks just like the book on Amazon. orngtongue.gif The library's website must've just been silly and shown an older looking cover. I figured I'd get the book early and get a head start since I'll likely read the book slower than the rest of you... I get distracted easily. redface.gif

Are we going to discuss the books thru this thread or just use this thread as our "main" book list/Q&A thread? I figured since we'll have lots of books to read, we might want to use separate threads for each book's discussion in case we want to easily go back and reference things. Just a thought.

Great idea, Joanie! thumb.gif

Oh, I'd like to read Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves by Naomi Aldort as well as Hold On to Your Kids by Gordon Neufeld

And I agree with separate threads for each discussion!

I have that one, too, but I wasn't sure if it was too controversial shrug.gif

I personally think the Continuum Concept is dated, simplistic, and makes no reference to research.  I find other research and books more compelling.  There are definitely some good ideas in TCC and perhaps it would be good for a book club in order to discuss it and critique it, but not necessarily as a guide, kwim?
