Cervix Pressure

For the past two weeks I've been doing a lot of visualization for the fetus of it moving its head into the perfect position.  Last week I actually felt him rotating and moving a lot.  For the past four days or so I have a brand new sensation of intense, shock-like bouts of pressure of my cervix.  I can feel the fetus's feet up by my ribs.

I did a little research and I found that pressure on the cervix this early -- at almost 27 weeks -- can be a sign of "cervical incompetency."  Having lost a fetus in my third trimester for no apparent reason I feel scared that maybe I have this issue and stand to lose this baby.

Does anyone have any information to share about cervical pressure, cervical incompetency, or anything related?

That is something I would definitely talk to your midwife about. I don't have any advice or experience just ::hugs:: and ::good vibes::

I agree that you should talk to your midwife/care provider about.  Cervical pressure can be a sign of preterm labor.  Not trying to scare you or imply that your situation is like mine was...  But I had a lot of pressure in the few weeks leading up to losing my twins in my second trimester.  Granted, there were other signs that things weren't going well (extreme fatigue, odd pains, and mucousy, then pink, discharge).  But in this situation I'd err on the side of caution.  If you have an "incompetent" cervix, you can get a cerclage or be put on bedrest to prevent further downward movement of the baby.

Please keep us posted...

DDC crashing from August...

I have had a ton of cervical pressure lately (I'm 22 weeks) to the point where it is terribly uncomfortable to stand still for more than about 2 minutes. I told my OB this at the last appointment, and she was somewhat concerned about cervical incompetence. She said the only way you can tell is to have an ultrasound so they can measure the length of the cervix. I went for a transvaginal ultrasound (it took literally about 30 seconds) and they found that my cervical length was perfectly fine. It was quite a relief, and was a very quick test to make sure everything was ok. I'd ask your midwife/OB about this if you are worried!

oh hun! I would talk to your midwife, but i wouldnt worry too much. I have had the same pressure, and had it with my last baby too. Her little hands up around her head...so when she wiggled around and moved her hands it put a lot of pressure on my cervix. I would get twinges of pain and pressure. I hope everything is ok for you.

Exactly the same with my last. And this one loves to headbutt my cervix now that he or she is head down all the time, causing sudden intense twinges of pain.

I have gotten accustomed to the pressure on my cervix.  It's infrequent and kind of nice.  blush.gif

My midwife recently came back from a conference with Ina May Gaskin in which she spoke at length about the "cervical incompetence" issue.  I left our conversation feeling like what I suspected was true: that it is just another medical term to discount a woman's body.  Some women do have short cervixes or complications involving the cervix. Fortunately, she does not feel that I am one of them and neither do I at this point.

I just can't get my mind around why a medical term would be so degrading, as if to imply that a cervix is not adequate enough to perform the functions of pregnancy and childbirth.  Just another log on my fire.
