Fill in the blank

Hi! My name is Hillary. I am 35 years old. DP Sasha and I have been together for almost 4 years. We have 3 kids Sabine, 10 Mariposa, 8 and Luca 3 months and 2 cats Maisie and Michael and a worm bin. If I was at my favorite restaurant right now I would order oysters with rock salt but we will actually be having quinoa with fresh veggies and local fish for dinner tonight. When I work for pay I have done many things and am trying my hand at an from-home baking business right now. When I am home with the kids my favorite part of the day is late afternoon when we're all home and I'm making dinner. My hobbies and interests include cooking, baking, nutrition, music, crafting, gardening...many others.

Favorite

Music: I am a huge music geek and have very varied and eclectic interests from traditional, folk, African, punk, jazz - I really really love music.
Movie: Riffifi by Jules Dassin - old film noir heist classic by a blacklisted filmmaker who moved to Paris.
Book(s): Love. favorite Authors Alice Munro, Harry Crews, Lorrie Moore, Kazuo Ishiguro, James Baldwin
Season: Probably late summer..like, late August/early September.
Household chore(s): Cooking, gardening, nursing the baby ;)
Cause: I try to help single Mamas and their kids whenever/wherever I can having been one myself and now having a support system.
Diaper: Fuzzibuns is what we use b/c it's what I was able to get my hands on. They work for us. I used Imse Vimse with dd and wool but found we are allergic! I don't miss velcro but could do without the PLU.
Baby carrier: I still use dd's 10 yr old Maya Wrap and love it for around the house and baby snoozes and closeness. We have a Beco Butterfly II which is great for the front-carry on longer hikes but the back-carry puts him down too low. I have a plan to get some fabric and learn how to tie him up high on my back so I can do more and he can see what I'm doing!

If you could change one thing about _____, what would it be?

The world? I would slow everything down, a lot. Make more time for reflection, gratitude and mindfulness.
Your house? I would subtract the scary railing and add another room on the top floor.
Your parenting? I would have more creativity in moments of stress and frustration...be able to maintain my sense of humor always :)
Your life? I would love to have mastery of a musical instrument and an excellent singing voice.

What would your best friends say is your best feature? Intuitive and non-judgmental.
If a genie gave you three wishes what would you ask for? I could see most wishes having an evil flip-side which would inevitably manifest, but I'd say I would like to free all sentient beings from suffering and the roots of suffering :) that might cover all of it.
Do you have any pet peeves? Mouth noises, for sure. Socially imposed insincerity by way of "politeness". Gender role bullcrap.
Where would you go on a dream vacation? Hmmmm probably Japan.
Where is the best place you've been? Okinawa was very rad.

ooo...what kind of baking do you like best?

Thanks for asking me a question Ashlee I can hear the crickets chirping around here! We must all have infants :)

I like to bake bread but can never make it "good enough" because I don't have a brick oven.

I LOVE to bake pies and that will be the focus of my new biz if all goes well.

I usually bake vegan because of dairy restriction in my diet and I don't like super-heavy stuff. We had a potluck brunch yesterday and I made vegan pumpkin cinnamon rolls and decorated them with icing and toasted pumpkin seeds they were YUMMO and super easy!

Here is the recipe! http://www.eatliverun.com/vegan-pumpkin-cinnamon-rolls/

I used flax meal in place of the chia seeds.

Off to change a poopy diaper....

Those look awesome.  I love anything pumpkin.  I made an AMAZING pumpkin cheesecake with a ginger snap crust for my husband's birthday this last November. I make GF pumpkin chocolate chip paleo muffins regularly - way yummy (coconut flour, coconut oil, 6 eggs, honey...).  I used to be Vegan years ago, so I can appreciate that for sure.  In fact, when I worked at a raw vegan cafe I was the dessert chef :)  Lots of yummy pies with nut/date based crusts! Will you be selling your pies at farmers markets?

nak....

yes, we have an enormous farmer's market here in Hilo - I just have to get the ball rolling on my tax license.

I've done raw baking as well and will hopefully find some clients for raw, vegan, and/or gf pies. I actually like baking with "restrictions" because it forces me to get creative and think outside of the box. I remember making a raw butternut squash pie with an almond/date/coconut crust that was soooo good!

The economy on this Island is in worse shape than on the mainland but DP is a professor and has a good job. We still need to pull in some more $$$ because of the cost of all of us traveling so much (mostly kids to/from their other parents). I was *going* to return to my job managing the produce section at the local health food store but decided I just can't right now! I'm enjoying being home with Luca more than I remembered when I was home with dd. Mostly, I have a better support system, DP has been awesome.

So I'm going to see if I can build a little pie biz! No one else is doing it with local fruits, organic flour etc. I will start at the farmer's mkt and put up a website if all goes well :)

sounds like a great plan!  hope all goes smoothly and you have financial success!  I too enjoy cooking/baking with restrictions...added challenge :) my dream has always been to have a home based business while being home with the kids.  that's one of the reasons I studied and worked in the field I did - knowing I could easily have a home office (nutrition and massage) and teach classes (yoga) when the kids are school aged.  When I worked for The Four Seasons I always hoped we would go to one of the properties in Hawaii (free rooms!)...never made it though... how long have you lived there?  do you love it (other than the cost of living)?

I'm amazed at how much having a support system helps. Even when Stephanie will only be happy in my arms and there's nothing Andrew can really DO to help, just having a more positive vibe in the house makes all the difference.

What would you say is your most useful kitchen gadget?

What's the first thing you think about in the morning?

What's your favourite room of the house?

nak again :)...

i love hawaii but yes the cost of living is high. dp having a tenure track position in exactly his field - which he loves - creates some stability that many others on island do not have so we are very fortunate. i feel we took a "hit" as far as schools go...coming from burlington vt where the schools are excellent...dd attends her 3rd school here in 2 years and skipped a grade into accelerated 5th grade in order to be challenged. she's doing well! things can be a bit casual here for this uptight new-englander but i prefer it to the more aggressive, materialistic and self-centered end of the spectrum which prevails back east. the culture is very friendly...aloha spirit is a real thing. i miss my friends and family. we miss sdd who goes to school in vt still but we're hoping to be her cp's sometime in the near future depending on when her mom totally bottoms-out :( i wear the same pair of havianas every day so i'm not complaining!

my favorite room in our house is definitely our bedroom which has a view of the mountain from one window and the ocean out the other, luca was conceived and born there! it's super cozy and dp painted it my favorite shade of green before the baby came.

my most useful kitchen gadget is probably my kitchen aid for bread-baking cuz it saves on all the kneading time!

the first thing i think about in the morning is usually what a sweet little peach the baby is because he sleeps next to me and i usually wake when he starts his cute little babbling to himself...then coffee :)

me too mummoth...i still do a lot of work and in some ways am in a similar "role" in the family with dp as i was with xh but it is entirely different because it's not imposed upon me and if i needed anything to be different, dp would support me in that. also, i am valued and so is the work i do! yay!

I love Vermont.  Brattleboro (sp?) was really cool.  My mom was born in Maine and grew up in New Hampshire (then in HS the whole family moved to AZ).  I was born and raised in AZ, but have been in New England a little bit and NYC a lot - so different than the Southwest :) .  The schools here in Las Vegas are REALLY crappy...  :/
