I had my NT scan on Thursday, my 13 week appointment. My partner really wanted to know if she could see the gender. There looks to be something down there when the baby finally gave us a potty shot. She said it is "probably" a penis! Not sure how much to bank on that. What do you think? 13 weeks too soon?

yes. 13 weeks is too soon. the sex organs have barely started differentiating, so it takes someone really well trained to be able to tell at this point.

Actually, by 12 weeks the sex organs are completely formed in some babies. Other babies will take an extra week or two for the sex organs to form completely. (Source: Anne Frye) With my oldest son, we had an ultrasound at exactly 12 weeks and you could clearly see his penis.

at that age you could also "clearly see a penis" on a girl though. genital differentiation isn't complete until 14-15 weeks.

Where are you getting this information? I am getting my information from three different and new obstetric and midwifery textbooks for obstetric and midwifery students. Willams, Mayes and Anne Frye.

Again, SOME babies have complete genital formation BY 12 weeks, and SOME babies take another week or two to complete the formation, but the genitals on those babies are nearly completely formed by 12 weeks. It's just a "tightening up" of what's already there, it's not that parts are still forming and that you would see a penis on a girl.

My understanding was that it takes longer than 12 weeks for there to be a difference. See the ultrasound pictures on this page, especially the ones at the bottom of the page. The 14-week-old girl looks pretty 'boy' to me. Now, of course, an experienced sonographer might be able to tell better, but the point is it's not exactly clear-cut at that age.

Yes, this statement is correct, because not ALL babies have complete genital formation at 12 weeks, though some do. I simply wanted to clarify Marissamom's statement of:

because that is not a correct statement, as SOME babies WILL have complete genital formation at 12 weeks, and some babies will take longer to have complete genital formation.

I'll play :)

We already have a boy and a girl, so no pressure here ;) dh was spot on with his predictions in both pregnancies (he is the intuitive one of us) and this time he guesses boy again. It's funny, because so does everybody else - including my mom. So for now I am cherishing my little girl while she still is cuddly and cute and... well, my little girl! ds wishes for a little brother, so we'll see...

we'll find out in about 5 weeks at our 20w U/S

I'm guessing BOY, but I'm also biased because that's what I want!

I say boy bc that's what DH thinks and that's what I want first. Lol The MW thinks based on timing of O, I am having a girl. We'll see! :)

We find out June 12th!

Aside from unintentionally "finding out" at 12 weeks (I already knew he was a boy before I conceived) DS1 was a boy, we have always decided to forgo the anatomy scan and let the baby's gender be a surprise. And boy was I surprised when DS2 was born! yikes2.gif

Anyway, for the first time, I actually kind of want to maybe find out this baby's gender, so I can plan stuff better. I don't know. I'm majorly waffling. uhoh3.gif I also have really weird luck too. The one time I decide to find out the gender, the ultrasound would be wrong. eyesroll.gif

Congrats to you mamas who know!!! orngbiggrin.gif

ETA: For now, put me down for GIRL. I keep saying "she" and "her" in my head about this baby. We'll see sooner, or later! lol.gif

Gosh, I'm waffling as well.  We found out with our first but didn't with our second. It was great not knowing with DD and she was such a surprise because I really thought she was going to be a boy.  I'm having a strong urge to find out with this one though for the "so I can plan stuff better" reason and I think it would be comforting in some way to know already if that makes sense.

When do you all find out? My provider doesn't do the big ultrasound until 20 weeks, so I have to wait another 5 weeks. I feel like some women get to find out much earlier. I'm so impatient!
