Motherwort and other tinctures during pregnancy

Thread Starter

Hi,

I'm 17 1/2 weeks pregnant with my first. I read in a pregnancy specific herbal book that motherwort was a good choice for anxiety during pregnancy and have been taking approximately 3-4 droppers full throughout the day for the last few days. Today I read online that it is, in fact, NOT good for pregnant women. Does anyone have any experience with this? And should I be concerned about the amount that I have taken?

I'm also taking skullcap for sleep aid, about 30 drops before bed at night, and have been for two weeks or so. Does anyone know anything about that?

There's so much misinformation and conflicting information on the internet, I'd really appreciate any personal stories you might have.

Thanks so much.

My midwife told me to only take motherwort near the end of pregnancy, because it influences hormones. I'm sure you didn't cause any damage but probably best to stop. She gave me something with passionflower and some other things instead. I don't know anything about skullcap sorry.

I take Motherwort as needed as well. I take this tincture for anxiety. I generally stick to Susan Weed's advice, as well as my midwives.

The one thing to take note of is that Motherwort can be habit forming. Maybe try and break it up with some Rescue Remedy?

I would be cautious about using Motherwort during pregnancy. It is a uterine stimulate, can bring on menstruation and has an effect upon hormone regulation. It is fine in the days leading up to the birth and for use postpartum, but earlier in pregnancy can potentially cause problems. Better options for treating anxiety would be passionflower or milky oats tincture. Or even better is a nerve tonic infusion of nettles, oatstraw and red raspberry leaf.

Skullcap to help with sleep can be useful, but again I wouldn't use it on a daily basis. The nettles/oatstraw infusion will help with sleep as well since it nourishes the nervous system.

Best of luck to you mama <3
