today on a field trip i let some of my class pee in the bushes

i took my class ( first grade ) to a local park. i had 20 kids and my co-teacher. we get there and the bathrooms are closed. i get on my cell phone and call park patrol and ask if they can send some one out to open the bathrooms. they said "we'll try. blah, blah, blah. " in the mean time, kids have to pee. so i take toilet paper that i had with me in some nearby secluded bushes and they peed. not as a group. one at a time i took boys. they whipped it out and let it loose. then with the girls they leaned back and sat and they peed. I, for one, think it was fine and so does my co-teacher. but maybe with some parents it wouldn't be ok. you know what i mean?

Opinions please. if it was dd or ds i would hope the teacher would be resourceful and do what i did.

but not every parent thinks like me.

What else could you do? You had done everything possible, there was no bathroom, the kids had to pee. I'd be a happy parent that you handled it so matter-of-factly. (But then, we pee in the woods all the time - we do a lot of camping! It's no big deal.)

Since the bathrooms were closed you had no other choice. Now it does annoy me when men pee in public places when there are bathrooms because it starts to reek. Imagine if they all did it?! But in this case it's the park's fault for not having the bathrooms open.

I think what you did was fine. I have a vague memory of chaperoning a kindergarten field trip which was a hike along a river path, (no bathrooms anywhere) and when some kids had to go, they had to go in the bushes--I think the teacher designated a private spot. So, it's been done before! I can't imagine a parent saying, "I can't believe you didn't force my child to hold his bladder and let him pee in the bushes."

I think what you did was perfectly fine!

I would have been angry if you *didn't * let my child pee!!! You did fine.

When ya gotta go, ya gotta go:LOL

I would have done the same thing. It would have been a lot worse if they had to go and couldn't. You did the right thing!

I would have been annoyed but what else could you have done. even if you had packed them all back up and driven back to the school someone wouldn't have made it. I have to say I am impressed that you had TP with you :LOL

Next time call first and make sure the bathrooms will be open. Girls squatting has never been short of a disaster for us (pee everyewhere etc . . .and crying confused girls. I mean what a disaster if one of them had hit thier clothes. Also I don't like the idea of other people being able to see my children and a bush only offers so much protection. But then again wehave had several incedences f pedofiles spying and taking pictures of kids in city parks while they peed behind bushes, parents changed diapers and toddlers changed swimsuits at the pool. Creepy stuff.

As a teacher, I think you were fine.
But, if you're in the habit of updating parents frequently by letter, then I'd make a joke about it just so they have the info. Much better than hearing about it first from their kids as kids love to exaggerate.

ok, now i feel better. i promise you guys the bushes were very secluded. when the park person finally did arrive she was pissed that she got a phone call from park and rec saying" go open the bathrooms at so and so playground. " they are so over worked but not underpaid . they all make about 80,000.00 dollars a year. for 80 gran a year i'd put in a bidet. ha ha!

that was a good one.

next time i will call ahead cause now i know the number by heart.

The thing I noticed in your post was that you took them one at a time in the bushes and that they were secluded!

I think that's great!

I would MUCH prefer that then you load then up and take them to a public restroom like a fast food restaurant or a rest area! YUK! That is stressful getting kids across a parking lot, not to mention the legalities of taking the kids somewhere the parents were not informed! Seriously, what would your other options have been? I've named a few and they are worse.

I would thank you for your consideration of my child!

I would have no problems with what you did. What other choice did you have?

Bushes are usually cleaner then any public rest room, I'd prefer to pee in nature then have to hover over a public toilet! I'd have no problem if you took dd to pee in the bushes!

I see nothing wrong but I would think it wise to send a note home explaining.

One of those children could have parents that question your sanity/ablity and put your job at stake.
