Bladder infection could cause preterm labor? « Back to Group Discussions

Okay, so I had been having discomfort for about a week and having some severe Braxton hix contractions. I called my doctor and she suggested that I go to labor and delivery to be monitored. Everything ended up okay, except they found that I have a bladder infection and the doctor told me that a bladder infection could cause preterm labor, so we are fortunate to have caught it before it got any worse, as I was feeling worse every day and in more pain.

has anyone ever heard of this before/experienced this?

I've never experienced it myself, but from my understanding any infection can cause pre-term labor.  I don't know the exact reason, but my guess has to do with the body's response to the infection and trying to fight it off.  I'm glad they got everything under control.

Yep, Ninetales is right.  Your body is set up to preserve your life first, so if there's a serious infection your body tries to jettison anything that might suppress the immune system or take up valuable resources (like a baby).  So infections can lead to miscarriage early on and early labor later in pregnancy.  Glad you got it all taken care of!  Preterm labor is scary stuff.

Thank you so much ladies for your responses. It was very scary thinking that I could be going in to labor and only at 25 weeks!! I am feeling a lot better, but still have spells where I do not feel good.
