What beautiful and creative names, everyone!
We don't know the sex of our little one, so we have two potential names: Donovan Gavriel for a boy and either Luthien Indigo or Luthien Liora for a girl.
Donovan is a character in an anime film who starts out as a conventional samurai-type swordsman and who, by the end of the series, decides to move on to the higher path of "honing myself" rather than his sword (which is represented as so huge that he can surf on it). Gavriel means either "divine strength" or "God is my strength" and appears as a divine messenger in Jewish, Christian, and Muslim scriptures. In Jewish tradition, he's associated with the sacred quality of Gevurah, which has often been translated "severity," but we associate it more with the strength that comes through restraint and inner conviction. (Although I have witnessed little kids looking pretty stern sometimes!) Gavriel has also been considered a protector of parents, especially pregnant mothers-to-be, which was a moving discovery for us, as we've been blessed with this little guy or gal after multiple miscarriages.
Luthien is a character from J.R.R. Tolkien's mythology who challenged Morgoth, the "ultimate bad guy" in Tolkien's world. While she created a magical invisibility field, her beloved Beren snatched a magical jewel, a Silmaril, from Morgoth's crown, wreaking havoc for the evil one. To us, Luthien represents courage, love, and firm dedication to rightness. Indigo is the main character of an eight-book series by Louise Cooper. In each book, she confronts one of her own inner demons and triumphs. Liora means "light" in Hebrew, and this little one is a great light in our lives!
Although these names are the result of much discussion over the years, we're waiting for the baby to emerge into the world to come up with all kinds of wild nicknames. Judging from the nicknames of our cats (such as "Globular Cluster" for round Fahfrd and "Bunny Butt" for Celeborn, who's a Manx), they should be unique.
Many blessings to you all and to beautiful babes-in-formation!
