I just stumbled upon this thread and the OP's description of her son sounds a lot like my own---I'm wondering if there can be allergies/intolerance without any poop issues (I don't know how to phrase that more pleasantly--sorry!) My son has a lot of the same behaviors the OP mentioned---he spends a lot of the day whining and crying and throwing tantrums. I've always just attributed it to his spirited personality, but now I'm wondering if I'm missing something. His appetite is pretty typical of a two year old, he snacks throughout the day but tends to be pretty picky and doesn't eat much at mealtimes. But he doesn't seem to have any issues with digestion---no diarrhea or pain that I know of (not sure he'd be able to verbalize pain if there was though.)

I think I'll eliminate dairy for a bit to see if that helps, but I thought I'd see what you ladies know about this and whether dairy allergies always lead to digestive problems.

Hmm, DD has a similar temperament and drinks cows milk at school. She loooooves rice milk but wont touch almonds or almond milk. I'm wondering if her love of rice milk means she might be ok with keeping it in her diet. I will eliminate that and food dyes (daddy and grandma are the culprits, not me) and see what happens.

I just wanted to update this thread with our experience.  We went gluten free about 2 months ago.  The change in my son's behavior was almost immediate (within 2 days GF).  He continued to improve for about 2 weeks (even his sleep improved) until I went out with my husband for our anniversary dinner at my favorite restaurant - I indulged in lots of gluten there.  My son (who I am still nursing and can likely get gluten through the milk) had a setback.  We continued GF after that one meal and he improved again, so I haven't tested it again!  My son changed from being miserable, whining all day long, melting down over tiny little things to more typical two year old behavior (he is happy most of the day but still has the typical toddler tantrums at meltdowns from time to time).

It does sound like it could be food issues and you've gotten great advice on that front. If it is behavioral, I wanted to recommend Dr Karp's Happiest Toddler on the Block. The techniques were life altering for us - especially for my husband. Good luck to you! I can't imagine how hard this must have been for you!
