Celiac disease and group living

I have a question. We live in a group setting and my daughter has celiac disease. I don't have cooking facility (really only a communal microwave and my personal rice cooker). Meals are provided BUT as much as I have spoken with the kitchen staff my child is still unable to eat most of what is presented. They either mix gravy with meat, serve breaded crap, or use the tongs for bread and whatever she IS able to eat. I have complained about each of these. I am at the point of filing an official complaint about the kitchen in general. My child IS NOT the only one here with special issues. The ones I know of are a peanut allergy, diabetics, and religious dietary needs. So, it seems that THIS would be a big deal since a good tenth of use are affected by this. Some families choose not to eat here. This is not a choice I can afford to make every single meal, or I would (I wouldn't even be here if I could afford that). So here is my question: How do I deal with the lack of EMPATHY the workers seem to have??? I have gotten attitudes from most of them JUST from asking questions so that my child does not get sick.

Just saying what I feel at this moment, but I would go to a higher power. If they are unwilling/unable to compromise, then you have no choice. This is not a "picky eater." She CAN NOT eat these foods. I would think that having worked in a setting like that, they would be a bit more compassionate if not respectful for individual needs.....

Can you get a note from a MD detailing her celiac disease and the importance of a gluten free diet?

Yes, talk to whoever's higher up.

I think you need to outline exactly what you expect from them & ask them point-blank if they are able to accommodate her needs. Perhaps if they are not able to cook differently for the group, they could at least individually prepared meals for her or even have frozen dinners on hand or something, or give you vouchers to get meals for her elsewhere.

That sounds like an incredibly frustrating situation to be in.

Thanks. It is incredibly frustrating. I have spoken with higher ups. I have decided she will be eating a lot of gf sandwiches until we leave here. I know its not healthy but McD's hamburger are gf. I order plain, no chz, no bun. Then i put ketchup and I'm thinking of adding her gf bun. She's getting tired of the same ole same. Ya know? I keep snacks for her and have stopped eating in the dining area. It causes too much stress for me. I am hoping to be out of here in about a month. I have jus decided to just be. They aren't going to be more sensitive and continually get the attitude. Then others think I'm being unrealistic. Honestly, if 1 in approximately 100 people have this condition SHE isn't the only one they have had to deal with. Anyways, I am just going to not eat in the kitchen unless I have no other options and now I do. :)

gopicnic.com has some shelf stable gf meals, not all are so you have to read, but maybe you could get them to buy some to have on hand for her.
