Travelmumma - it sounds like hiring a doula would be a great option for you. I admit I kind of scoffed at the idea the first time around. ("why would I pay someone? That's what I have a husband for!") but in retrospect having an experienced woman around would have helped my husband to be able to support me better! Also, during the birth my midwife turned out to be more medically focused than I had expected. I ended up pushing flat on my back and coached to hold my breath, which I think an experienced doula would have been able to suggest other options.
This time, in addition to DH and the two midwives, I think my mom will likely be in the house looking after my son. Whether or not they witness the birth will be up to my son. He'll be turning 3. Also, I'll likely go with a doula this time, or at least an experienced friend who will bring the right kind of energy.
My husband doesn't know any of this yet, though. He think we haven't decided whether or not to birth at home or in the hospital again. He'll come around, I'm sure.
