I need to teach my kids (ages 5 & 11) basic lessons about personal safety - when it's appropriate to call 911 and how to do it, fire safety, playground safety, using knives/sharp objects, when it appropriate or inappropriate to speak with strangers, etc. The hypothetical lessons in the boy scouts handbook won't work for my kids. My 11 year old has autism, and needs a social story format. My 5 year old does better with a narrative format, and needs to learn how to explain his needs when necessary - he has severe stranger anxiety and will shut down when there's a difficult situation. If you know of a specific curriculum for any type of personal safety issues, please post here!!! Basically, I need a place to start so that I can build lessons organically on that foundation. TIA!

I am sorry that I don't have a name for you, but I did stumble across this the other day online somewhere. There was a secular cirriculum (that seemed really neat and comprensive). It has safety skills (I think they called them life skills) as a prominent section of the work. There was a man explaining the cirriculum in videos. I *think* I came across it when looking into prehistory resources. But I have no idea who it was - sorry! Maybe that info helps with a search?

post #3 of 75/25/12 at 9:37pmThis isn't a curriculum, it's a book, but it goes over just about every emergency you could imagine (and probably many you wouldn't imagine.) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0881602701/ref=wms_ohs_product
post #4 of 75/25/12 at 9:39pmThis book has been great for teaching how/when/why to call 911. It's for younger kids. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1591252741/ref=wms_ohs_product

ETA: I linked to the youngest level, but they have them for older kids too. Drop down menu "Cirriculum" - I see it under Elementary, and there may be sections hidden in the older groups too.
