Can a 23 month toddler get a headache?

I was just putting my son down for a nap and he touched his head and said "ouch". I asked him if his head hurt and he said yes. He's never done that and he's pretty rough and tumble, not one to get overly focused on an "ouchie". Anyway, he went to sleep fine but it made me a little worried. I have never heard of a toddler having a headache. He didn't hit his head today so I can't figure out what it might be. I guess I'll wait until he wakes up and ask him again. Has anyone else experienced headaches in a child this young?

Of course.  They might not always be able to verbalize what hurts at that age, but when a child isn't feeling well, anything can hurt, just like in an adult.

Maybe his head hurt because he was tired, or a little under the weather.

Why wouldn't a toddler be able to get a headache? I have also wondered this about my cats, lol....but of course even cats get headaches. It is odd, though, to be left guessing. At least he could tell you....with a baby all they can do is cry and we don't even know if it's pain necessarily, and with cats it's even more mysterious.

But yeah, I think headaches are pretty universal for beings with heads!

Yes!  Not that I remember it, but I had chronic headaches when I was 18mo, which turned out to be eye inflammation (vaccine related).
