Getting to know the ladies: Our first chat thread - Page 4
Thanks, Chloe'sMama and mamabear! Mamabear - No, we're not in Oklahoma, we're in Indiana. The cradle was given to us by a gruff old man who vended wood crafts like that at the same farmer's market we used to sell at. It is not at all antique, but it is solid pine. He actually gave it to us just when DD was getting too old for a cradle but we kept it for a second baby. We plan to co-sleep again, but I thought it would still be convenient for naps. Of course DD might not want to give it up now that she has her dolls in it!
We have most of what we will need saved from DD1. I would like some infant sized fitted diapers, though, if I can find them used for cheap enough. We had started with prefolds and homemade wool covers with DD, and switched to fitteds when she was in a medium (too many poop-on-cover episodes with the prefolds!). So we have all that we will need in diapers from medium on up. Her carseat had this terrible latch system that required you to fit the two sides together like a puzzle and hold them in just the right position while you clicked them into the buckle. So when we lent it to a friend later I told her we DID NOT want it back. Her DD will be growing out of it soon, but I think I can find a better one used if I start looking now. We had two bouncy seats - one upstairs and one downstairs - but one was borrowed and returned, and the other I gave away because I thought it would be easy enough to find a better one at a thrift store and I didn't want to store it. So what are people's thoughts on bouncy seats? Good? Bad? Just unnecessary for you? I had thought that we would always have DD in a carrier and never need to set her down anywhere, but I realized that was a little unrealistic. She got worn plenty, but there were definitely times when she preferred to be on her own and times when it was just not convenient to wear her (like in the shower for instance!). One of my friends just would lay her baby on the floor on a blanket wherever she was working, but I was always afraid that she would get stepped on or something. Also, our floors are honestly not the cleanest, not all the time, and I don't imagine that will get better with another baby to care for. I feel like the floor is probably better for baby's back and gives them more opportunity to learn to roll and stuff, but they can see more of what's going on sitting up in a bouncy seat. We did take all the batteries out of our bouncy seats (and all battery-containing toys we were given), because we don't want DD mechanized and overstimulated from the get-go. Any opinions on bouncy seats?
Brambleberry, I love your house! The finished look is very much like the cob house I want to build. I'm in Louisville, too. I have a 3 and a 6 year old so no quiet baby playgroups for us, perhaps we could go to Tyler park though. I made my first appt with Juliet the midwife today, maybe when I see her in a week and a half she can help me narrow down dates (I might belong in the Jan DDC but hey I go late anyway).
I was going through our hand me down stash and found I have infant prefolds, some small PUL covers, small fitted pocket diapers but the rise was too low in the back on those as I recall, and one newborn wool soaker. For a winter baby I'd love to use wool longies if I can knit some up, and fitted diapers if I can make them work or convert the prefolds. We have hardly any baby clothes, we thought we were done so I only saved a few favorites. We won't be checking gender (I've had babies react poorly to Doppler with hr acceleration and kicking, won't be subjecting this one to an u/s or more Doppler than needed), so a bunch of neutral 0-3 clothes will do until after the birth. Mine only fit in that the first month anyway.
Thanks, JamieCatheryn. Is your midwife on the Louisville or Indiana side of the river? Do you know any good midwives on the IN side?
I really hated pull-on wool soakers for the newborn stage. I made a bunch of wrap style covers from recycled sweaters that worked well, but this time I'd like to try using wool sleep sacks as a cover for the first few months. We'll have to use t-shirts rather than onesies, and I'm a little worried that we'll still end up with pee wicking from the diaper up onto the shirt, but boy would it be convenient to not have to maneuver any pants over those stiff newborn legs and still have the convenience of a cover and outfit in one.
Oh sleep sacks are a great idea for night and around the house, I just added a pattern to my knitting list. And another sweater.
The MW I'll see, Juliet, is on the Louisville side. My last MW trained under her but stopped practicing recently. I know of Michelle Sanders on the IN side but I don't know much about her myself. If you want a hospital CNM, Beth Barry at Clark is supposed to be excellent.
whoa so much chatter, i'm all caught up now! brambleberry, love the room/house! it is adorable.
Chloe'smama - that sucks about your appointment! hope you can hear the HB then and that the time passes quickly
I am also in the slow long drawn out process of moving my youngest DD out of our bed and room to her big sisters room.. about 6 months ago i set up a toddler bed in there for her, and about 2 months ago i set up a twin bed on the floor in our room, for now she sleeps on the twin bed for naps and the first stretch of sleep and then she gets up and comes to our bed.. this is what my DS did until my youngest DD was close to a year old.. (well, he came from his room to our room at that point).. so i know it will be ok if i don't get her totally out of our room/bed.. but i'd like to night wean her in a few months .. one thing at a time though.. i'd like her to be night weaned, sleeping in her bed most of the time, done growing teeth, and potty trained by the end of the year.. that could happen, right? (she is 21 months now )
i've been really thinking about birth lately.. i think i'm going to set up a birth tub this time around.. in the basement.. that is the extent of my big thought process .. lol
What's going on? this is #4 and morning sickness is way worse than any of my other pregnancies :( today i'm going to try sipping on ginger ale all day to see if it can be kept at bay. blah!
When is your first appointment, if you are seeing a doctor or midwife? july 17th, but i've already gone to see the CNM to rule out molar pregnancy...i've also had one sono (last monday) but i am having check up sono tomorrow to try to hear the hb with the doppler because they didn't hear it last time. she made a note that she saw a 'flutter'.
What are you scared or anxious about? i hope to hear/see the heartbeat tomorrow. dh has to watch the kids so i have to go by myself and that makes me sad, i wish he could be there with me.
What are you most excited about? i love love love newborns
Have you bought anything yet? (dont be shy...) i don't think we will buy anything until we know the gender, i keep thinking i want this time to be a surprise...but i just don't think i'd be able to wait.
What's going on? I'm having crazy nausea this time around. I have a feeling some of it is stress this time too. DH and I are discussing separating so I may end up becoming a single mama before this little bean is born. That is causing a lot of stress...go figure.
When is your first appointment??? I've actually already had 3 and 2 were for u/s to make sure everything was ok since the first was so early. My next one is one July 5th and I will have another u/s then to double check EDD. My dr said he saw a heart beat last time so I'm looking forward to seeing it again and seeing how much it's grown.
What are you scared or anxious about? Well as I stated above, I will most likely be a single mama before this one arrives so I'm terrified of anything going wrong wile I''m alone with my DS. I know it's going to be hard to have a 5 year old and a newborn, and work full time, but I will do what I must for my little ones. I do have a lot for friends and family who I can't count on though so I know that will help and DH says he will be there for us no matte what.
What are you most excited about. I'm looking forward to feeling the kicks and telling my DS. I know he will be so excited and he will be an amazing big brother. With everything going on it'shard right now to get excited about this baby, but don't get me wrong I am excited, but it's hard to be too excited like I was with DS since we had tried for several months with him. This one a surprise and one I will cherish no matter what.
Have you bought anythign yet? No, With my life so up in the air I'm sure it will be quite awhile before I buy anything for it. Im hoping if it is a girl to get a bunch of hand me downs so I won't need to buy much.
Wow, I hope that wasn't too much to share.
Hi there. Im annemarie. Im also in shock that I am here right now. Still wrapping my head around it. we dont try or prevent so it was bound to happen but I justdont feel sticky... it could be this is Emma's time frame as well so i keep thinking it will play out about the same way. I wont relax until September comes. this is baby 6 for us.
What's going on?
I keep forgetting I'm pregnant. Last time I had SO many symptoms, but I remember my morning sickness started at exactly 6 weeks. Hopefully I can avoid that this time.
When is your first appointment, if you are seeing a doctor or midwife?
First appointment is 7/13, with a new midwife. I was EXTREMELY disappointed with my midwife last time. I was supposed to have a birth center birth, but she didn't answer either of her phones when I was in labor. I delivered in a hospital and she never even came to check on me. Planning a hospital birth with this new midwife, who practices in the same office as the most well-known "natural birth friendly" OB's in town.
What are you scared or anxious about?
My son came early, with low blood sugar and Down syndrome. I want to do EVERYTHING in my power to avoid having another NICU baby. Worst 8 days of my life.
What are you most excited about?
Everything else! A new baby! A bigger family! My little man becoming a big brother! DS has the BEST personality, so it is so fun to try to imagine what this next one will be like!
Have you bought anything yet? (dont be shy...)
Not a thing. We are very minimalist when it comes to babies. Also, like I said, I keep forgetting I'm pregnant. lol
What's going on? Not much - this is such a surprise.
When is your first appointment, if you are seeing a doctor or midwife? Doctors. The practice I have been with both prior pregnancies have both OBs and MWs. I am actually a lot fonder of the OBs in this particular practice. First appointmetn is a dating ultrasound 7/12, followed by an appointment 7/19. I can't wait! it will make this surprise even more real.
What are you scared or anxious about? 1) My milk supply - I'm nursing my 8.5 month old, and she's 99% breastfed. I need to seriously work on giving her more solids and see what I can do to maintain at least some milk until she is one. Preferably until the new one is born. 2) Family reaction. We aren't in the best financial place right now, and having babies so close together is challenging, and definitely wasn't planned. It's a blessing though!
What are you most excited about? Being pregnant again, and for the last time, probably. Adding to our family and getting to know this special person that decided to join us.
Have you bought anything yet? (dont be shy...) No, not yet, but I am trying to think of a special wrap I am going to "need" for this squish . . . LOL I started wrapping with this baby, and I  it. I am thinking maybe a wool or cashmere blend for a winter squish would be dreamy . . . . and I am going to need a new car.
