Preschool hours with baby on the way?

We are contemplating a half day (afternoons) or whole day preschool for our 4 yr old. Expecting #2 beginning of Nov. would it be better for her to have school longer day or to be home with us in the mornings and then go in afternoon? I homeschooled her this year - but she has had school experience and I'm not worried about separation. My husband works from home so I won't be alone with the 2 either.

Any wise mama thoughts?

DD started a couple of afternoons at preschool when DS was a few months old. It worked out pretty well for us.

I would put DS in the buggy to walk her round and he would generally fall asleep, leaving me a bit of time to have a meal in peace and a bit of a rest before he woke up and it was time to collect DD. I think for DD half days were better, she needed some down time after being round that many children and I don;t think she would haev done well with whole days.

The main issue we had was DDs preschool started at 12, with lunch. Since DS would fall asleep on the way I generally gave him something to eat around 11.30. Of course DD wanted something too and then was not really interested in lunch at preschool. I did let them know she was not likely to eat lunch and they had fruit & milk later in the afternoon so she was fine. Once they had a few children who'd finished they took them outside to play so she was happy, it ws just that first part while she was bored that was a pain.

My eldest went 2 mornings a week while DS was an infant. It was just right for us. Morning was good because the baby was usually up, social, ready for an outing. Afternoons were usually when the nap happened and having to wake to get into a car would not have been fun. Who knows what your baby's schedule will be but for mine, morning was better!

DS attended half-days for 5 days per week. He enjoyed it and made quite a few friends. He started a few months before his baby sister was born, so it was part of his routine and not really another change when she came along. It was nice for him to be able to tell us about the new things happening in his world.

It could be a hassle to get out the door in the mornings with the 2 of them. It was also sometimes a hassle to collect him just a few hours later if the baby had just settled down. It sounds like that might be less problematic for you, with 2 parents at home.
