A major challenge for pertussis control is that neither natural infection nor immunization induce life-long immunity against subsequent infection.

I'm glad your little one came through OK and that everyone's feeling better.

re the comment about the vaccinated child getting the symptoms - ditto here.

H1N1 went through my daughter's day care like grass through a goose.  i brought her in on the monday and thought we'd missed a field trip:  out of 40-some kids, there was only about a half-dozen.

interestingly enough, all the ones (incl my daughter) who didn't even get a sniffle were not vaccinated for H1N1.  the ones that caught it were a mix of vax'd and unvax'd but the ones who were away the longest were vaccinated.

That's really interesting.  I remember being worried when there was one confirmed case of H1N1 at my son's daycare that year, but no one else in the whole school got it, and it was the flu season when the H1N1 vax had just come out, so I doubt most of the kids had it.  I know my son didn't have the vax.

Colds, random stomach viruses and pinkeye went through the school like wildfire, to be expected, but H1N1 was a non-event, even for the child who had it.

Yeah, from what I understand it's not lifelong, but it does last anywhere up to 10 years. For me, when I had what I think was pertussis, it was about a decade ago. Could have been a whole range of things from luck to who knows what though. :-P
