Ways to get the cervix to thin?

I'm 38w 2d today and have been at about 1cm and not at all thinned for a few weeks.  I'm hoping to get things going next week before my due date to avoid having an post-date ultrasound and induction like with my last baby.  What are some ways to get the cervix thinning and opening?

Have you tried evening primrose oil (I take capsules by mouth, but some people insert them) and sex? Those are two ways that I know of to ripen the cervix.

Hmmm, there is really not a fool-proof way to get yourself thinned and soft enough to make something happen that's not gonna happen anyway...I would also recommend the PPs suggestion but I would hate for you to rest your hopes to avoid induction on evening primrose oil, you know?

Is there anyway you can push back with your doctors on the induction? I mean, really..there is enough medical/scientific data to support waiting another week or two that you would think you could maybe get them to be reasonable??

I'm really sorry mama, that would be stressful, to be on a clock like that. Have you pressed the issue at all with them? You being stressed about a countdown to an unnecessary induction that you do not want is NOT going to make you more likely to relax and release your baby, know what I mean?

My midwife recommended evening primrose oil capsules, 1500-2000 mg (2 or three depending on dosage) inserted at bedtime. She didn't think taking them by mouth was as effective.  I have an appointment tonight and I'll let you know what the other midwife suggests.

Other things I've heard of are sex, and nipple stimulation and castor oil I think are more for starting contractions but I guess that includes thinning?

I'm 38+5, and they will induce me at 41 if necessary because I'm a VBAC. So right now I'm just waiting, but two weeks from now I may be trying every old wives' tale under the sun...

I'm trying the EPO capsules inserted - I had been spacing the doses out during the day, but maybe all at once is more effective?  I'm trying to be more up for sex too, but still not the most appealing thing for me at this point :)

I want to avoid castor oil (sounds miserable) and I've heard nipple stimulation leads to stronger and longer contrax (which is what I want to avoid from pitocin induction...)  So, EPO, walking and maybe some sex for now!

broodywoodsgal - I don't feel pressure from my midwives for induction, I'm just basing my anxiety on my previous experience.  My midwives are totally on my side and are hoping for labor to start naturally before 40w too, with my first they just did what they had to based on the ultrasound info.  Thanks for the vibes!
