Back carrying tiny babies is sometimes a bit easier- they're not moving around a ton, they often just lay there calmly as you wrap around them. If you get them up good and high, just like how Lindsay's picture shows, then you can feel them breathing. Do a few spot-checks in the mirror to make sure they're good, here and there, and it's usually fine. Stressful the first few times, for sure, but can be such a life saver.
I started back carries with Orrin at 6 days old. I've tried a few with Everett, but he screams bloody murder so I bring him down again right away (he screams in all carries, all carriers).
