Tetanus vax and farm/homestead/off grid/rural/horse living...

Ok I am curious to keep it in this section as the situation is unique. I know many people do not vax for it and many people live rather urban lives, but those living more rural/farm-y are at a different type of "risk" level.

 

 

So has living "rural" changed your stance on vaxing adults or kids for tetanus? I am debating this myself and haven't decided yet. headscratch.gif

We vax for it.  We don't keep horses but it lives in the soil a crazy number of years and there were once horses on the property.  Plus my boy is pretty free range, can't get him to wear shoes, etc. so we feel safer keeping that one up to date.

Tetanus and MMR are the only things we vax for.

we have two horses and two VERY free range kiddos who are always shoe-less despite my efforts to keep them with at least something on their feet, so yes tetanus is a must for us!

I believe that you can get a tetnus shot after the accident or whatever would infect.  At least that has been what we have done.  No one gets it until they need it.  I do know a guy who had had tetnus and it was horrible watching him....  So not something to really mess around with- but I also think that as long as the wound bleeds good the chances of getting tetnus are very slim.  I try to make sure everyone who punctures themselves gets a good bit of blood through the wound.

The body takes about two weeks to respond to the tetanus vaccine by producing immunity so it probably won't help to have one after the injury (for that injury, it'll help with the next one). Although there is some suggestion that tetanus spores can survive in the body for long periods waiting for the right conditions to produce disease so I guess vaxxing after the event may help in that case.

Aside from wound care, the way to prevent tetanus after the event is to give a dose of tetanus immunoglobulin which is not a vaccine but a dose of the antibodies required to prevent the infection.

YOu can give TIG and tetanus vaccine on the same day and most EDs will offer that if the person has not had a tetanus booster in the last five years (in the absence of a susceptible injury the time between boosters is ten years).

We have a small farm with horses. We vax for tetnus.
