Northern CA, good camping spot & something fun for 6yo in Redding area

On our vacation, we'll be leaving Oakland on the 27th and meeting with a friend in Grants Pass on the 28th.
The 27th ALSO happens to be my son's 6th birthday. So... looking for someplace to camp, relatively close to I-5, between Oakland and Grants Pass, and something fun to do in the area for the 6yo on his birthday.  SUGGESTIONS??

We have camped in Whiskeytown a number of times. It is about 30 min west of Redding. They have numerous lakes, the water is cold but really clear and nice.  It never seems to get really crowded. You have to pick a campsite at the visitors center/ranger station.  :)  enjoy!

I'll second camping at Whiskeytown.  It's a pretty lake with swimming.  If you go into Redding, the Turtle Bay Museum and Paul Bunyan Forest Camp might also be fun for a 6 year old (http://www.turtlebay.org/).

We just discovered this spot on Lake Siskiyou,

Its very family friendly and easy I-5 on and off, but not too close :) We were on our way back to California form camping in Oregon. Shasta City is a nice area too. The Lavender farm you cam visit might me fun to check out if not too hot that day.

Have fun!
