Security Systems & Insurance Coverage for Off-Grid. Is it possible?

We have been looking into insurance coverage for off-grid homes & have found that few companies will insure homes where the primary heat source is wood heat or not thermo-statically controlled. And, few will insure for theft... some offer an extra "rider?" for that.

SO...

My question is, where does one go for insurance...

AND...

What are the options for an off-grid home owner to secure their home. I'm guessing gate... dog... some sort of monitoring system... signs? But, what kind (for each)? And, what else can one do?

As long as your wood heat system is up to their code/standards they should insure you.  They will also provide that information for you and possibly want to inspect.  I would call a local insurance agency that works with several companies.  Ok- doesn't your homeowners policy cover theft?  Also I would think you would want an umbrella policy for like a million in case someone is hurt on your property- stupid I know- but necessary.  

Are you really worried about security?  Isn't the area you are in safe?  If it isn't I would move.  That said- we have a mastiff- who is a doll to us and very scary looking if you didn't know her.  I tease about getting a holstien bull for a security system- probably not the best plan though :)  I think if someone wants in though a gate or dog is not going to stop them....

If you live off-grid, I highly recommend you call your insurance company and specifically ask if you have theft insurance. Very, very, very few companies offer this. We have found 2... maybe... but one for sure.

Yes, the umbrella policy sounds like a good idea. I hadn't thought of that but DH did when I mentioned it.

I don't consider this area unsafe... but, I do know off-grid homes get broken into b/c there isn't anyone nearby or around. Yeah, we definitely want a dog. I have heard of other security type measures to take and we are considering them...

Regarding the wood heat system: a lot of companies won't insure if its sole source of heat. Actually, we just read this online & haven't verified. Glad to hear that though... later we might install a propane heater if we want more options.
