BFN. Damn. Not that I was expecting a positive, but I had hoped, of course. But this No was easier to deal with than the first one, for sure!
Has anyone in here tried acupuncture? I've gotten a recommendation from a close friend, for someone who specializes in fertility. I want to try it-- to feel like I'm doing something to help our process. Plus I fully believe in acupuncture, even though I haven't had it as of yet.

lovestreet 13 Sorry about your BFN, I did do acupuncture with my first kid and got pregnant on the first try, and I swear the acupuncture was why. I went to a fertility specialist for three months, and did acupuncture and herbs (that she made herself) I think the woman I went to was a miracle. . wish I could get back to her for trying the second time which is still in process but I have no free time! I highly recommend it. My SIL also went to the same person and two of her friends who were doing IVF and they had follicles double after going. As we just did at home insem, as did my SIL, it's hard to know what had an effect or not but we both had successful pregnancies. I kept going for the first trimester too which she said helped hold the pregnancies. Also, I think it did help me feel like I was "doing something" to move things along and in this whole process where control feels pretty illusive it felt good.post #165 of 1847/24/12 at 7:46am
Hi all, I know I put this question out there before and don't think it applied to anyone but am trying again in case someone new is reading. . If not sorry for blasting the thread again. .
Anyone have any experience doing at home insem using KD but sending sperm overnight through the mail? Or if you don't do you know anyone who does? We are trying to do this for the first time this cycle and desperately want some advice about timing? # of insems or just anything really! TIApost #166 of 1847/24/12 at 8:49am
lovestreet - sorry to hear about your BFN.
Cordelia - I haven't shipped sperm overnight -- I didn't even really know that was possible if it wasn't frozen. Sorry I don't have more info on that. In terms of timing, it seems most common to insem 24-36 hours after LH surge. If you have a second dose of sperm, my midwife recommends using it earlier, the same day as the surge. Ideally you would learn about how long after the surge you usually ovulate, based on temps or ultrasound.post #167 of 1847/24/12 at 10:14amHopeful--I am so sorry to hear about your family emergency. I hope everything is okay! Whoever takes the thread can easily just make a new one and maybe name it "End of July and August thread" or something--it shouldn't be a problem!
lovestreet--Sorry about the BFN! I know how horribly disappointing they can be. I am always depressed for a couple of days.
Cananny (or anyone else that went through injectibles and wants to respond )--Okay, I am assuming it is normal to get estrogen checked while doing injectibles...do you know anything about what the levels should be at? My FS called to tell me that my levels are pretty high (still okay, but high) and that there is always the chance of "complications". Any clue what that means? I always think of questions that I have AFTER I get off the phone....
Cordelia--As outdoorsy said, 24-36 hours is normal and if you don't really know when you ovulate, the more insems you do spaced out by about 12 hours, the better. I would recommend temping to figure out when you ovulate for future cycles.
So...I am on my 9th day of injectibles and had an u/s yesterday. It showed 6 follicles--I can't remember the sizes (a few were pretty small) but she said things were coming along enough for me to finish out today and do my ovidrel shot tomorrow night. If all goes well, my IUI will be early on Friday morning. Whoo hooo!post #168 of 1847/24/12 at 1:01pm
Hi Everyone! I was out of town last week, and I've been trying to catch up. Sorry if I miss anyone.
Cordelia and any other new people I missed on the previous pages. I hope your stay is short and sweet. I'm sorry I don't have any advice to share. I know there have been some discussions in the past about shipping fresh sperm, but I think those folks may be on a break now. I know there is a kit you can order that has a container and a special medium to mix with the sperm to keep it stable during shipping. Seems it is usually shipped overnight when you are approaching O. It can't hurt to do more than one insem if your timing is ok with the donor and with shipping deadlines.
Lovestreet - I'm very sorry about your BFN. They are always disappointing even when each one feels different. I hope you have better luck next time. I am doing acupuncture. I love it. It's sometimes recommended to go once a week. I have a schedule to go around cycle day 10 and 20 or about 10 days after O, whatever works out. It's very relaxing. My acupuncturist also mixes herbs for me that go with each part of my cycle. They are different each time so I feel like they are customized to what my body needs. It's good to go to someone who specializes in fertility and who will look at your charts.
Lisedea - I wish I could answer your question. It's a good one. I'm getting ready to start injectables next week or so. 6 follicles sounds great! I hope all goes well this week and your IUI is pleasant and successful!
Cananny - I hope the TWW is going well and that your vacation was very relaxing!
AFM - I haven't heard from Hopeful on my offer to take over the thread. Is there anyone who really wants to be threadkeeper for August? We could always muddle through for a few days and then start a new August thread. I'm totally up for being threadkeeper, but I had the job in June so I want to offer the opportunity to anyone who wants it.
I had a good visit with my friend who just lost her husband. It was actually a pretty nice, relaxing visit. She's doing pretty well. She's very fortunate to have lots of wonderful friends and family who are very supportive. Now that I'm back to real life, I'm pretty busy. I'm catching up at work and getting ready for the next cycle which should start in a few days. I had my meeting with the nurse practitioner this morning to learn all about giving myself the shots. It seems fairly easy except for getting the silly cap off of the vial. Now, I need to call the pharmacy and find out how much they cost. Yikes! I'm excited to try again but stressed out about all the work I will have to miss. I'm trying to relax and not worry about it too much because it just makes me feel bad and there's nothing I can do about it. I went to acupuncture yesterday and I slept very well last night after a few nights of not sleep well, so that was nice. Tomorrow I have the chiropractor which is also very relaxing. The doctor said the adjustments also help my Qi to flow properly. That's good too!
Good luck to everyone who's waiting for some part of their cycle whether it be waiting to O or waiting to test. I'm excited for all the new folks and I know we will have some BFP's to celebrate soon.post #169 of 1847/24/12 at 1:17pm
Thanks everyone for your responses. I appreciate the help. I am trying not to get anxious about this bc I know it won't benefit me in the long haul at all but it's hard. I feel like I am getting old, can't really control the situation at all, my donors of packing up for a cross-country move so things are crazy!
I am pretty sure I know when I O by LH surge and CM so I guess we will just try this and see how it goes. Thinking we will try to inseminations on day of LH and day after and hope for the best. I used to be regular as clockwork but I have just never completely gone back to normal since having #1 . We had planned a trip to SF to do an in person but of course I got my LH surge the day we came home so we had tried the night before but it didn't work out.
Lisadea.. good luck on your IUI!post #170 of 1847/24/12 at 1:24pmpost #171 of 1847/24/12 at 1:35pmpost #172 of 1847/24/12 at 1:38pm
Im noticing some people saying the OPK are not very accurate, and that I need to inseminate the day before O, Im due AF tomorrow so planning on tracking my temp/CM etc from next week and doing this for July and Aug before TTC in Sept, but not sure how easy this will be after reading he stories! I have managed to stop smoking though in prep which im pleased about :) Its so good to be on a thread with real people and real examples/experiences/joys/pitfals, so that I can see the reality and not the textbookpost #173 of 1847/24/12 at 1:39pmpost #174 of 1847/24/12 at 1:52pm
OPK's can be frustrating. I had a hard time telling if the lines were equally dark so I switched to the digital with a smiley face. It's generally advised to look for fertile signs that line up. When you have 3, that is time to go. That could be fertile mucus, high/soft/open cervix and a positive OPK. Or if you always get bloated or feel ovulation pain or have increased libido, one of those can be one of your three signs. If you're checking for nice stretchy mucus you can also check to see if your cervix is soft and high. Those are all good signs. You're using fresh, so you have a bigger window, and that's a big advantage. Good luck!post #175 of 1847/24/12 at 1:57pmpost #176 of 1847/24/12 at 2:28pmpost #177 of 1847/24/12 at 4:29pm
Twinkle: If you haven't already read Stephanie Brill's "Guide to Lesbian Conception" get it and read it. She is the one that opened my eyes up to both Known Donors (fresh sperm) and having three signs line up for ovulation targeting. We did get pregnant three times using her methods so I think she's great! And you're right, OPKs don't work for everyone. Digital ones work best. If you are using them, you really need to make sure you're peeing on them twice a day -- once mid morning and once 12 hours later. Your surge can happen in a 12 hour period and a lot of people make the mistake of only using them once per day, risking that they will miss their surge. I preferred to use them in coordination with other signs (BBT and CM for me).
Lisedea: your estrogen check is used to keep an eye on the maturity of your eggs and when you will be ready for trigger. It's checked very regularly in an IVF cycle because in coordination with your ultrasounds, it can really pinpoint when they are ready to retrieve the eggs. In an IVF cycle, they want your estrogen somewhere around (but no higher) then 2000. Also, if your estrogen isn't doubling daily or so, then they know that the eggs aren't maturing or they aren't maturing at an equal pace. I'm sure in a regular injectibles cycle + IUI they are looking for the same thing. Each follie produces about 200 for your estrogen level so if you have 6 eggs, they're looking for about 1200. 6 eggs is a lot for an injectible cycle. I have a friend that's in her second IVF and they are just getting about 6. Does your doctor say they're all growing at the same rate and is okay with the risk of multiples?
AFM: still waiting to do a frozen embryo transfer of our one genetically good embryo.post #178 of 1847/24/12 at 4:53pmLise
They check your levels daily to watch for doubling and for my med to see how much of a dose to take . Each day could b a diff dosage ..I did my shots for 8 days then trigger ...my last cycle I had 15 eggs and 6 big ones over a 18 this cycle I had 7 and 4/5 were of good size ... Fx these follicles are nice and strong.... My levels on last day were high too and I had a little reaction where my calf of leg swelled up....they were worried re blood clot .... Luckily it wasn't ! I think complications could mean more than one baby ... My re said I'd have to reduce if there were more than 2 and I'm ok with that ....
Pokey Tww is going by ... I don't feel pregnant but it's not over till next Monday
Hi new people and welcome !post #179 of 1847/24/12 at 8:03pm
I hope I don't leave anyone out!
CANanny: Fingers are still crossed for you.
Lisadea: We are nearly on the same schedule!!
Lovestreet: So sorry about your BFN
Pokey: If you are okay to take over the thread, I would just go for it, I don't think anyone would mind!
Hopeful: Still thinking of you and hoping everything is okay.
Krista: Fingers crossed for you that this is it!!! Do you have an approximate transfer date?
AFM: Had my HSG today and everything came back clear! There is a small possibility of a tiny bit of "fibrous" material at the top of my uterus, but it's undefined and may be nothing at all. Dr. said it was nothing to be concerned about. I also had my follicle check today -- I had over 20 immature follicles and one "perfect" 18mm follicle on my left ovary. I was so excited because I had surgery on this ovary years ago and I wasn't sure if it was functioning or not. I just did my trigger shot and my IUI is scheduled for 10:30 tomorrow morning. Holy crap! I'm terrified and excited all at once. I went for acupuncture tonight -- (and it's worth mentioning again to those considering acupuncture but where cost is a barrier to check out https://www.pocacoop.com/clinics/search/0,0/18000/ to search for a sliding scale community clinic near you) -- and I am going for acupuncture again tomorrow before my IUI and again immediately after.post #180 of 1847/25/12 at 5:49am
