18 month old wont let anyone touch his toys....what to do?

Hello everyone,

We are having trouble getting him to share.  Is he too young to understand the concept? 

Also, it's been so long since I've had a baby around, I cant remember how old they are when they start talking.  Greyson is saying MaMa, DaDa,  CoCo (my dog), and he calls me "NoNa" for some reason, cause his mom and dad refer to me as Grams, as do I when I'm talking to him. 

He will also put his hands on the sides of his face and say "Oh, NO!!"

He's got the word NO NO down pat....when he doesnt want something, he will shake his head and say NO NO, NO NO,NO NO.

Are we asking too much?  Please let us know what to expect here.

Hi Grams.  Welcome to MDC!  I wouldn't worry about the not sharing thing.  18 months is pretty early to expect sharing. 

As far as the language, it might be something to keep an eye on as he gets older.  That being said, my three boys have had huge differences in their speach development at that age.  By the age 3, they had all caught up with each other.

1-3 yr olds don't understand the concept of sharing. Toddlers are (rightfully so) super egocentric. It's completely developmentally normal. I would not force or even actively encourage an 18 month old to share. They lack that empathy needed to understand how others feel. It's enough for them to get their own emotions in check at that age.

Sounds perfectly normal. From a year to around a year-n-half, I've had my daughter scream "NO" across the playground when a kid just "looked" in the direction of her toys. Followed by "MINE MINE MINE". Awkward? yes but now at 22 months, she's showing willingness to share if the moment is right
