So I told my mom I want to have this baby at home...

And she said that she thought it was wonderful, that if it is something I wanted to do, I'd always regret not going for it, and that she would do anything she could to support my decision.

First, I almost fell off my chair. Then I started crying. She's amazing. I knew she might be open to the idea. She believes that drug-free births are what we should hope for, and she herself was born at home. But I was still nervous about telling her.

My dad on the other hand, said he was going to get me on the phone and straighten this craziness out immediately. Luckily, I have my mom as an ally.

Just wanted to share cause I was so happy.

Good for you, and her. It sounds like she will be a lot of support to you!

MamaLeah, I relate! I put off telling my mom about our planned home waterbirth with midwife and doula, because I thought it would terrify her. I waited until she came to visit and I could tell her in person. When she was a child, she knew someone, a friend of my grandmother's, who died in childbirth at home. I assumed that my mom would fear all homebirths based on this one tragic event. Boy, did I underestimate her. I explained why I was so disappointed in my son's hospital birth, quoted for her a lot of statistics about homebirths that I had researched, etc. She simply said, "Honey, if you've decided it's the best way to have your baby, then I'm sure it is. I trust you." That meant the world to me. We subsequently had long and wonderful conversations about birth, the power of women, the wisdom of nature, etc. It's been wonderful, and I feel silly about how nervous I was to tell her.

By the way, I never thought my husband would go for a homebirth, and he's the one who brought it up. It's been powerful and wonderful for me to see how the people I love most and think I know so well can still surprise me.
