Ah, another Diana Wynne Jones fan!

Best book of hers (IMHO): Power of Three. About gifties, but in a different sense...

Witch Week and Charmed LIfe are wonderful, too.

Oh, yeah! I actually think Power of Three may have been my gateway drug, though I found her as a kid or tween and don't remember for sure. It was published as part of a really awesome series in the 80s called ... Magicqust, I think? It was an edited series of fantasy that was either for kids or totally kid appropriate, and it was like a survey course of magical books and I wish I'd been able to find and buy more of them.

Charmed life and Witch Week have the advantage of leading into a series of related books, which is why I usually tell people to start there.

Oh which reminds me-- another huge DWJ fan is Neil Gaiman, who has written kids books. Creepy kids books, but really good ones. Coralline is much creepier as a book, and The Graveyard Book won a well justified Newbery award

But there is a trilogy for younger readers:

The Harper Hall trilogy, or The Harper Hall of Pern in its omnibus edition

I'd ditto the first two, but I'm pretty sure there's a reasonably age-inappropriate sex scene in Dragondrums.  But the first two should be ok.  I fell in love with those books when I was in about the 6th grade but I would've been maybe 11 at the time. 

I loved historical fantasy when I was in upper elementary, especially anything related to Greek mythology; alas, I couldn't name any specific titles anymore.

Maybe try: The Girl with the Silver Eyes.
