Let's talk... NAMES! - Page 11

I love the name Astrid and we considered it - but it's kind of our daughter's name... sort of, in a weird way - she came up with this character "Astrid" that she plays in one of her games with Daddy - and please bear in mind that she IS a well-adjusted, normal child - "Astrid" is a 3-year-old who was abandoned outside a bar by her parents and adopted by DH's character (who doesn't seem to have a name).  Astrid is poorly behaved and reacts negatively and violently to the presence of "alcohol".  I swear, she thought this up by herself (although she may have been exposed to Punky Brewster at some point) and I've no idea where the name Astrid came from.

Just, you know, whenever you think YOUR kid is weird...  but I do like the name Astrid very much, and so does DH - but we just couldn't justify using it for an actual child of ours!!!

(Astrid is now semi-retired, having been placed by Hermione Granger.)

I haven't back read the posts but wanted to chime in on Astrid. I really liked the name Aster, which is a sweet flower native to New England. the reason we ruled it out was because my DH was nervous about the nickname "ASS" and i couldn't convince otherwise.

I'm having trouble coming up with a middle name that I like, to go with it, though! Part of me wants a "plant" name. Part of me wants to use a family name. And part of me just wants something that sounds good, whatever it is. XD

My name is Sigrid, which is scandinavian like Astrid.  I have to say, I didn't like it a whole lot as a kid.  People always called me "Cigarette" or "Siegfried."  It didn't sound very feminine to my young brain and I kept wishing my name was something more girlie like "Tiffany."  Haha. (Which I think is hilarious now...).  Then... I grew up.  I was the ONLY one in my town, heck, even my county, (maybe even the region) with my name, but it was still something that some people had heard of before.  It has a history to it and a beautiful meaning (beautiful victory)-- it isn't made up or spelled in a strange way.  I can really appreciate having a solid but unique name.  When people think of my name, they think of ME.  I am really the only association many people in my acquaintance have with that name, which can be a heavy burden to some, but I think it is cool.  :)   I am a nurse and introduce myself to new people every day, and I do get tired of people saying: "What is it?  Secret?"  and having to spell it "S-i-g-r-i-d" and showing them my nametag.  But... worth it to have a very unique name.  It sets me apart, and as an extrovert, I totally dig that.  :)   Once people meet me, they never forget me.

Astrid is beautiful (It means "Fair and beautiful") and I love the uniqueness.   It will get some unwanted nicnames (ever see that episode of the Office?  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0UTsVmCuZc&feature=related )  But... it is a lovely traditional and foreign name that your DD will be proud of as she grows.  Kids will ALWAYS be mean with names.  Even a name like "Stephanie" -- there was a whole episode of full house where Stephanie comes home from school crying because kids called her "Step on me."  HA.  So... as long as you and DH both love it, go for it.

As far as middle names:  have you thought of other scandinavian names to go with it?   Dagny, Tindra, Maja, Linnea, Elin, Johanna, Lovisa, Mira ?

DP's top boy name is Felix Alexander, which I like quite a bit.  I was concern about there not really being nickname options, but I've never really got by a shortened version of my name, so I guess it's not really a huge issue.  For girls we've thrown around a couple, I like Beatrice (DP likes Beatrix better), and we've talked about Chiara (pronounced kee-ar-a) after hubby's grandmother, and Felicity (actually a female version of Felix).  I also love the name Sadie, but worry it's going to be one of those super popular names for a snap in time.  DS's name is John Maurice, but we've always called him Jack.

We're not finding out gender so it might just be a last minute decision.  We hadn't decided on a name for DS until the day after he was born.

I LOVE Beatrice and Felicity!   I recently finished the young adult series "Divergent" by Veronica Roth and the strong main female character is Beatrice nn "Tris."   LOVE it.  It will be a movie in the next few years, so the name might increase a tad in popularity, but the character is super amazing.  I've always loved Felicity, as well.  It's such a beautiful name.

Felix is awesome!  I also never got a shortened nicname, and it was never a problem.  With a first name as cool as Felix, you don't need a nicname.  :)

Beatrice is the name of one of my favorite characters in Shakespeare, from Much Ado About Nothing.

I have thought about the "ass" part of Astrid, but, if I took into account every way that a name might be used for the purpose of bullying, my list of names would be incredibly short. ;)

lol.gif This made me giggle.  My kid is weird, too.  lol.  It's a good thing.  Keeps me entertained, for sure!

I like Astrid - we are avid Fringe fans - LOL - And I don't think it's horribly uncommon.

We are very set on our name for this nugget. We pretty much had it picked out since being pregnant with #2, and since #2 was a girl, the boy name got shelved.

And yes, any name can be used in bullying and/or teasing. I wouldn't necessarily eliminate a name for that reason alone.

Julia, Juniper is lovely!!!

Chapsie, Shiloh is beautiful. Very peaceful!

Delilah, Maddox was on my boy list but DP vetoed it. Maddax Annetta is very eloquent!

Cabbit, Astrid is awesome! Unique without being weird in my book! (Which are my biggest stipulations personally.). smile.gif

NearlyElated, Felix was on our list tonight!! I liked it but it didn't work for us. Felicity is quite lovely and unique as is Beatrix.

Chapsie, Sigrid is a lovely name! I'm glad to hear you grew to love it as you got older!

Spughy, that had me laughing like crazy! Your DD has such an imagination!!!

We've changed names! Our name was Charles Basil Rhys but it never felt quite perfect and as baby unicorn grew the name just seemed to fit him less and less. It truly felt strange every time I would call the baby Basil. So tonight I got DP to sit down and we started from scratch. Our baby boy is now Oliver Rhys (peaceful ardence) which just fits him so much better. Nickname will be Ollie I think. The name meaning just fits so much better with everything DP and I have been through and how little Oliver came to be. We will now have a Connor, Phoebe, Abigail, and Oliver. I think Oliver fits in with his sibling names better as well. I know, I'm babbling and gushing but I got 'the feeling' from the new name and like a switch I'm really excited to be having a boy!!! smile.gif

I'm seriously leaning toward Lysander. Haven't discussed it with DP yet, though.

Granola - love Oliver, and fits with his siblings perfectly! I love Rhys too.

Our kids will be Gabriel, Norah, and Theodore. I think they go together, at any rate. This baby better be a Theo bc DH and I don't agree on any others. I love Nathaniel, but he doesn't. Oh well.

I love Theo and Nathanial.  DP's not keen on either though.

Leander was on my list, with Leo being the nick/common name, but DP's not sure that the connection is obvious enough.

Akind1,  I LOVE  the name Theodore.  I am hoping that DH warms up to it for a future child.  stillheart.gif

Oliver is soo cute, Granolamama!  I also love it in it's feminine form of Olive.  Soo Glad you feel more at peace about the name.  :)

I love the name Oliver. My daughter is an Olli(e), too! :)

If this one were to have been a boy, Theodore was on my short list.

And Lysander sounds very familiar, but I can't figure out in which context. I like it a lot, though. :)

Lysander is a Shakespearean name, no?  (Gawd I hope so... I took enough Shakespeare courses for my English degree...) Possibly Greek origin?  Now I have to go look that up.

BTW I love Oliver.  It's too common around here though - if I used it my kid would be Oliver C. for the rest of his life.  Same with Olive/Olivia - I know a ton of them.  Lucky you, granolamama, if you live someplace where it's not AS common!  I don't have anything against common names, I just try to avoid the top 20.  (Childhood trauma from being Sarah P. for 17 years...and beyond...Sarah was the #1 most popular name in Canada when I was born and I *still* castigate my mother for using it.  "Oh, I just didn't think to check," she says.  Pffft.  My sisters both got great names - Anna and Rachel.  THEY never had to have an initial after their names.)

Edit: YES!!! Lysander was a character in Midsummer Night's Dream.  Also, a Spartan general.  Gotta love those Spartans.

Yep, but for me the inspiration is Lysander Spooner.

What`s up wit DPs and Nathaniel? twins.gif I love it too but not him!!!!

Akind1 - Thank you! I like Theodore a lot too but we have a friend named Theodore which ruined it for us. I think it goes very well with your other two!

SamiPolizzi - I do like Lysander! Lysandra was a character in a book I loved!

Spughy - Oliver is not popular around here thankfully!! I was Melissa T. so I can definitely relate! More power to anyone that wants to use a common name but it's not for us. smile.gif My rule is unique but not weird and preferably nothing overtly obvious in the teasing if we can avoid it.
