Portland and Vancouver, WA Information Needed

Hey ladies... I know quite a few of you are in Portland and some might know something about Vancouver as well.  I have a good friend that is moving to Vancouver, WA and is seeking parenting information.  She has a nearly 6 year old boy and would like to get involved in the parenting community and find out information about the schools, neighborhoods, local support groups, things to do with kids, etc.  I sent her the link to Vancouver's LLL and Portland's API groups, but are there Yahoo Groups she should join?  Local parenting websites that are helpful?  TIA!

Nothing?  Just a link or two would be most appreciated!  Thanks ladies!

I think you already gave her some good recommendations.  What about recommending the MDC PDX tribe to her?  I spent some time in Vancouver when I was young, and maybe it's not the same anymore...  But when I lived in Portland, Vancouver seemed so far away for some odd reason -- a little out of mind in some ways.  It is across the Columbia River (so geographically separated), and I felt like it had a different vibe than PDX.  So, maybe that's why there haven't been many responses?  If I lived in PDX, other than visiting my old friends there (who are not AP), I don't think I'd have any recommendations other than what you already recommended.

Yeah, I'm sure that Vancouver has a very different vibe than Portland, but she is used to driving distances to get places, so driving the 20 some minutes from Vancouver to Portland won't be an issue.  So any recs you have for Portland would be great.  She's not really a forum person, so I don't think she'd get on the MDC PDX section.  I did post in that forum, but no responses so far there, either.

I'm not in that area, but I found my AP group through Meetup.com.

So Portland doesn't have a large AP Yahoo Group for discussion and various playgroups?

I wonder if there are any neighborhood-specific groups -- like for SE, SW, NW, and NE?  NE neighborhoods would be the most convenient for her.  Depending on where she lives in Vancouver, heading to SE or SW might be a hike.  I wonder if Gresham or Camas might be good towns for her to try to connect with?  Has she checked the bulletin boards (real, not online) at the Vancouver New Seasons or Whole Foods for fliers?  What about joining a Waldorf parent-toddler group at the Portland Waldorf School (though that might too far for her since it's in Milwaukee)?  Hmmmm...I'm just rambling now.

I'll suggest that to her... she isn't there yet, but moving in a few weeks.  She wanted to get a head start.

Didn't Abra used to host a AP playgroup in PDF? I realize she can't anymore...but I thought there were a few ladies in Portland?

Yeah, she did, but I think she has been too busy with prepping the van, selling the house, etc. to see new threads.  Hopefully when things settle down a bit for her she can let me know more about it.  I can't wait to hear how it's been going for her!
