Autism Families Confront Insel and Sebelius at the IACC

"Yesterday, the first meeting of the year was held by the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee, and autism families were there to confront Tom Insel and Kathleen Sebelius in person on their failures in the federal response to the autism epidemic.  Canary members held a silent protest when Kathleen Sebelius completed her remarks to the committee and several members spoke directly to Dr. Insel and the committee during public comments."

Click on this link

to see video footage of remarks made directly to Thomas Insel and the committee, by Mark Blaxill, Katie Weisman, Mary Holland (all parents of autistic children) and Jake Crosby (a young man with Asperger's, who is earning a Master's of Public Health in Epidemiology at George Washington University).

Each of their speeches is absolutely fascinating.  Here is my attempt to paraphrase, but you can click on the links at the website below, and hear each speech in its entirety.

Mark Blaxill tells the committee that autism parents are not happy with what the IACC has been doing; fantasy has become "science," and those of us who are pleading with the IACC for a rational policy to address this crisis are accused of being lunatics.  It's difficult to be calm about it. The new members of the IACC need to understand they are working in a broken system.  There is a revolving door, where the leaders leave public service and go to work for pharmaceutical companies.

They need to remember that they have the freedom to UNmake bad decisions.

Katie Weisman addresses the lack of truth to the official position that "there is absolutely no link between thimerosal and autism," and offers studies and statistics proving otherwise; she asserts that the studies showing that there IS such a link outnumber others 2 to 1.

Jake Crosby addresses the corruption in the federal Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee.  He complains that those who have been selected to serve on the IACC; HHS has violated its own policy that federal advisroy committees must be fairly balanced in terms of points of view represented.  additional   former Merck scientist, along with a sceintific advisor to Alison Singer's vaccine industry front group. During 10 years at CDC, Jose Cordero coerced Pediatrics to fast-track infamous Danish report by Poul Thorssen, which fudged data to fraudulently indicate that autism increased after thimerosal removal; civil servants like Cordero should be fired, not apopinted to federal committees.

The vaccine director at NIH (who used to work at Merck!)  announced a decade ago that more studies were being undertaken "for the express purposes of ruling out link between autism and thimerosal;" addition studies must be undertaken and publicized to "allay fears" that vaccines cause autism. IOM chairwoman Mary McCormick stated in a closed meeting that IOM would NEVER admit that autism was a true side effect of vaccination.

Yet 7 out of IOM's 9 studies supposedly denying such a connection actually SUPPORT it.

Jake's conclusion: the IACC was not formed to find the cause of autism; it was formed to COVER UP the cause of the autism epidemic.

Mary Holland, JD, autism mother, director of EBCALA, and research scholar, says rather sarcastically that she is impressed by the self-congratulation amongst the committee members, but to the outside world, they remind her of when then-President Bush said, "Heck of a job, Brownie," congratulating Michael Brown  about what was actually a major fail in dealing with the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.  The IACC must be living in a bubble; autism has doubled, and it is not better diagnosis.  She suggests that they should be called the "autism acceptance committee," or the "autism appeasement committee," since that is what they are really doing.

She states that if they are not looking for the answer to "what is the relationship between autism and vaccines," then this committee has a very questionable role.

She mentions that 10 autism advocacy groups submitted a letter to Kathleen Sebelius, that went unanswered, though they did get a non-responsive letter from Dr. Collins and that they are submitting it again, and hope for a real response this time. They have also prepared a critique of the IACC, which can be read here: http://www.ageofautism.com/2012/07/a-critical-review-of-the-performance-of-the-interagency-autism-coordinating-committee-meeting.html

She also says that if this committee "stays the course" (as in, continues to deny the environmental factors that have a causative role in autism)  we should expect the autism rate of 2018 will be 1 in 44, based on 12-year-old data.

("Heck of a job, Tommy.")

Thanks, ma2two.

I am awed by the courage, strength, and knowledge of the parents who spoke at the IACC meeting.
