WTD - 15 month-old DC with 2 year old going through a somewhat rough patch????

Hi, Friends

I'm looking for some reminders because I'm back in that toddler phase again and don't remember a lot of it. I could use some pointers on re-learning how to help my DC (15 months) and her 2 year old cousin play. They are having some trouble with sharing and etc. Thanks!

I dunno, it sounds pretty normal and typical for their ages, and your best bet at this age there is probably a lot of distraction and redirection. Generally speaking, I feel younger ones are easier to distract and redirect, so I'd probably "give in" to the 2yo more than defend the 15mo's use of a tablet, if that makes sense. You can work on emphasizing taking turns, or maybe work on toys that everyone can play with like Lincoln logs or something where there's more than enough to go around.

I'll try to distract the LO a bit more.

I know it's probably not what you want to hear, but it sounds totally typical.  My kids are 2.5 yrs apart, and this sounds like their typical interactions at that age.  Even now there is a low level competition vibe between them, despite my best efforts to reassure both of them, etc.  I never "tolerated" them being paritcularly grabby or mean or whatever, but I also was not able to prevent them from doing it, and the gentle, firm ways I addressed it did not sink in for a long, long time. My kids seem to take a long, long time to learn lessons.  It's sure not for lack of trying, it's just that they are very opinionated and very persistent.  I wish they learned lessons easily, but they require dozens and dozens of times of guiding through interactions before the ideas even start to trickle into their brains.

I wish you good luck for the remainder of the visit!

Guess what?? It was much, much better the next visit and I have high hopes for the rest of the vacation!  So, it's all good! Thanks for your input!
