Best way to clean carpet upon moving in?

I have a major fear of pesticides and offgassing chemicals and therefore avoid carpet at all costs. However, we just found a perfect little country home to rent and I don't want to pass it up just because one room is carpeted. The carpet is old, with some stains, and the landlord said he would thoroughly steam clean it for me with just water and vinegar. I am concerned about pesticides however, as I have no idea if any were used in the house. I know roundup was used in the yard, as there's a big ole jug of it
In the shed. Would steam cleaning be enough to get most residue out of a carpet, or is the settled gross stuff from the padding a deal breaker? Do you know of any ways I
could make it safer for the kids?

Your LL sounds nice to offer to clean w/o harsh soaps/chemicals. I'd just have that done and call it a day.

I hate carpet. I dream of a house with not one inch of it.
