Ring stuck on finger, when do I cut it off « Back to Group Discussions

Well I have swollen a bit and hadn't taken my rings off. I sat in a freezing pool today for a while and managed to get one off with using some vasoline. I have tried windex to no avail but now my finger is bruised from getting the first ring off and super sore and red. I was thinking I should wait a couple days then try again but how long is it safe to keep the ring on, at what point do I just need to cut it off?

there is an ER trick of wrapping very thin  guaze around you finger to compress it sorta like 3 here:http://www.wikihow.com/Remove-a-Stuck-Ring.

you may waana dose up on lemon water to see if that helps swelling too

I just about needed my wedding ring cut off last pregnancy. I was super cautiousl and took them off around 15 weeks this time. lol

I think as long as circulation isn't a problem, it wouldn't hurt to wait a day or two to let the swelling go down and try again.

What eventually worked for me was to try first thing in the morning, when the swelling was at it's most moderate. For some reason hand lotion worked better than vaseline. I just kept working it side to side to get over the knuckle and eventually got it off, although my finger was purple by the time it actually slid off! The gauze trick sounds like it might be worth a try too.

Good luck! I hope you don't have to get it cut off, but if you do, it's probably better to do it sooner rather than waiting until it has to be done in an emergency room if your circulation does become compromised. :(

On the bright side, depending on what the ring is made of, a decent jeweler should be able to fix it for you afterwards!

I was going to suggest the same thing as dmpkmom. I've even seen it work with a quite swollen finger due to a poorly placed IV.

Spend more time swimming/walking in chest/neck deep water, and that will help your swelling go down all over. 

I haven't been able to wear my rings since my first pregnancy was halfway over, so I got a plain band off amazon that I wear these days.  In fact, it was cheap enough to get a 'regular' size, and a 'pregnancy' size!

Thanks Ladies, tomorrow when my finger is hopefully less swollen I will give some of these a try! I think circulation is okay right now, just purple from messing with it, ouch!
