Book ideas for a reluctant 7 year old boy.

Hi There,

I am currently studying at university, and for part of my course I have to write a book aimed for a 7 year old boy who is reluctant to read. I was wandering if anyone could give me any suggestions as to which genres are popular and other authors that I could look at for a reference.

Thank you :)

Think graphic novel.  I'd go and look at what is available in the children's section of a nearby library. The graphic novels are usually kept in a different section.  Then modify the vocabulary for the age and skill you are targeting.

There's also the Elephant and Piggy books, which are easy readers, that find a way to be very funny. Good for beginning to readers. The trick there is great characters (and excellent illustrations).

Here are the ones that were popular with my son and friends:

-- Captain Underpants

-- My Weird School series (Dan Gutman)

-- The Melvin Beederman superhero series

-- The DC Super Pets series

-- THe Adventures of Benny (by Steve Shreve)

-- The Sports Illustrated Kids Graphic Novels were hugely popular in my son's first grade classroom

Humor (especially of the potty variety) and action are the most important elements for a 7 y.o. boy, IME.

Good luck!

My 7 year old loves the captain underpants and diary of a wimpy kid. I think the combination of graphics and text really works for this age.
