Finally!!

After waiting for so long (I'm 12+2) I finally had my first appointment today. Everything looks great, iron is good, BP was 98/60 and baby's h/r was 144. DH and I got a little video and that was my FB announcement. love.gif I am measuring around 16 weeks, which I suppose is normal for a fifth time mom? I don't know. She did quick feel for FH and quickly found the h/r.. I've just been feeling like it could be twins and I still don't know for sure. I see her again at 20 weeks and she'd be able to tell for sure then, right? Anyway, just wanted to post about my appt. I am SO happy to have heard that little heartbeat! I always worry until I do.

That is great news - congrats!  When I had my first appt, our midwife felt my uterus and mentioned it felt a bit bigger than normal, and since twins run in my family, I'm getting an ultrasound a bit sooner to confirm.  You could always request one if you feel like there is a chance you have more than one in there!

josie- If I were you, Id get a us to confirm before 20 weeks. Here's why- The anatomy scan takes a bit of time, and if there are twins it takes twice as long. Your OB might not have booked that amount of time to dedicate to your US, so you if they find twins they are likely to just reschedule you anyway. Why wait the extra 6 weeks if they are going to have to do another US anyway, right? Also, our OB may want you to get a level 2 ultrasound for twins anatomy scan. That it what we are doing, main reason being because it is so much faster because the level two techs can often times interpret things faster, therefore resulting in less ultrasound time.

This is my 3rd pregnancy, and Im measuring right at 20 weeks at 13 w, 4 days.

Just chiming in, I'm a 5th time mom too and I'm measuring 12 weeks at 12 weeks, by my own palpation. Not much to measure but feels right on target with my other pregnancies.

Holly, I don't have ultrasounds. My (homebirth) midwife just checks with a doppler. I see her again at 20 weeks. That's why I don't know definitively how many are in there. She felt my fundus for a moment and then found baby's heart rate and that was it. Every time I am pregnant I wonder about twins so I kind of felt like a dork and didn't ask her how she would know if there are twins. Odds are it is one.. but I am just wondering. With my third baby I measured slightly ahead at 12 weeks, with my fourth my fundus couldn't even be felt at 12 weeks, and now with this one it is half way to my belly button. My youngest is 8.5 months, maybe it is just lax.

my homebirth midwife was always very confident to confirm a single baby pretty early, even though w/ my first two they kept measuring 'too high' and caused panic amongst the practice (one reason i went homebirth).  my mom carried big and high until 27+ weeks, and apparently they thought i did too.  i'm up about 1 1/2-2 inches below my belly-button at 13 weeks which seems normal for me.  when my bladder is even a little full, it's way up!  number 5 seemed to just lift up and float away....  keep us posted on the doubles!  i've had people suggest it's twins for me, but i'd be surprised!

Josie- sorry. I saw "video" and just assumed that it was a video of the US. I'd think she could tell by 20 weeks if you have twins in there. I can detect both heart rates with my doppler at 13 weeks, so Im sure she could too.

Oh, no problem, I understand the confusion! smile.gif I guess I will just wait and see now and know more at 20 weeks.
