So this is my first post here, I lurk on here from time to time, but don't have any babes of my own yet. My cousin is having her 3rd child and has decided to try cloth diapering. She doesn't want to spend any money on a newborn stash and from what I understand is getting mostly OS AIO or pocket diapers on the cheap from various locations. I wanted to help out and try to make her some newborn diapers and honestly I am a bit overwhelmed. Not in the actual making of the diapers but it seems there are a million different options for the fabric, the patterns, the styles.
So before I get in over my head, I wanted to see if any of my ideas are feasible. I have plans of making mostly fitted diapers with fleece covers and maybe buying her 2 PUL covers. Unless I am somehow able to make a whole newborn stash before he arrives (31 weeks now) She would only be using these part time.
The fabrics I have on hand are:
jersey knit (from joanne)
flannel (baby pattern from joanne)
Sleepy tee sheets (old and out of shape for bed, jersey fabric I believe)
Old tanks and white undershirts
Fleece from Joanne (both the very thin and the thicker polar fleece)
Microfiber towels from Ace hardware
I was thinking the jersey and the flannel would be soft against his skin and the microfiber could go in to the soaker with the old t-shirts??? And I think I read that the thicker fleece from joanne's was okay as long as I doubled up and used fabric softener on it?
I found a few threads regarding the free patterns but am having a hard time figuring out which one to use and how to adapt it for a newborn. I was also trying to think of ways to make them last longer than just a few weeks... the family tends to grow our males large. So I would hate to make lil-joey sized newborn dipes and them be too small after 2 weeks. I'm not familiar with putting on snaps, but know having a dipe with a snap down would be useful for her, and maybe give me a snap down rise? Am I trying to put too much into one diaper?
Sorry if this is very scattered, my brain is also a bit scattered at the moment. I appreciate any advice thrown my way! :)
