What does your newborn cloth diaper stash look like??

Hi there! I'm new to the october ddc so i'm sorry if this has been asked before! I am working on my newborn cloth diaper stash and i was wondering what you ladies have for your LO's!

i have a full stash of one size diapers from my daughter so i only needed the newborn size this time! i just ordered these online and they are currently being shipped but my stash so far includes

16 kissaluv size 0 fitted diapers

12 workhorse fitted diapers in newborn size

2 thirsties duo wrap size 1 covers

i am planning on getting 2-3 more covers and making doublers for the workhorse fitted diapers. is there a reason to have more that 4-5 covers if i'm washing every other day??

should i get prefolds? some aio's for when i'm out of the house? i plan to wash diapers every other day!

thanks for any and all input :)

Hi,

Welcome to the DDC! When my DD1 was newborn I used diaper service so I didn't own my own stash in newborn size. We started washing our own when she was 3 months old and started off with one sized AIOs and prefolds.

I know I don't love prefolds and DH definitely doesn't love them! We'll probably use some bc we have them. But I think we have enough to wash every other day and not really have to dip into them. Also this time I am going to try wool covers - so they may not be as annoying to use if I don't have to put a separate cover on - just pull on the wool pants.

I have:

24 assorted AIOs (lil joeyz, grovia, bum genius extra small and a couple other randoms ones)

12 fitteds (2 are Muttaquin and the rest I have no idea)

3 extra small Thirsties covers (leftover from diapering my first daughter)

3 wool covers (1 longie, 1 shortie and 1 soaker)

I got almost all of the AIOs and fitteds second hand off of diaperswappers. I got some great deals. Also I had bought 2 bum genius extra smalls and the 2 muttaquins ages ago and then when we couldn't seem to get pregnant, I decided I should sell them to my friend. I got pregnant 6 weeks later and she is giving them back to me at my shower next week. :-)

I personally love AIOs - probably couldn't hurt to have them for out. But definitely not necessary.

I have to say, I can't wait to see these itty bitty diapers on a baby!!! :-) I think buying newborn diapers was one of the things I was looking forward to most about getting pregnant. LOL.

lol i so agree! buying the cloth diapers has been something i was looking forward the moment i found out i was pregnant!  It's nice to hear from one one else who loves aio's. most people hate them because of the drying time and stuff.. which i get. but the convenience of them is awesome and they are always easy to convince hubbies to cd!  i was thinking about getting some kissaluv newborn aio's.. they have seconds on their website for only $10. i want to buy a couple lil joeys, but my concern is that they wont fit. my babies have all been bigger than the previous my daughter weighed in at 8lbs 3oz but she also gestated two full weeks longer than any of my boys did. assuming this little girl follows big sisters footsteps and hangs out past her due date she could be a good 8.5lbs. and all my kids regardless of  birth weight were 12-13lbs by two months. i'm not sure what other aio's would be a good option! maybe the grovia? and just not use them at night since they have leaking issues? i dont know. i may just get a couple of everything lol. worst case scenario i can always sell them right??

Yeah, I was shocked by the drying time when I first got my dipes - but now, over 3 yrs later, it's just normal to me. Worth it, in my opinion!

So I heard the grovias leak - but then I've also heard that often moms had that problem when they hadn't washed them enough. So I'm crossing my fingers. That said, they just came out with a redesign of them - I'm guessing to help with the issue? I tried asking around on diaperswappers if anyone had a review of the new ones and no one had yet - but that was at least a month ago. I think the BG extra smalls looked bigger than Lil Joeyz. The only new dipe I bought recently was a swaddlebees simplex - the reviews said it fit for a really long time. Plus the designs are so cute! And a mama I bought a ton of BG from threw in a a free Thirsties extra small AIO for some shipping delays. She said it was her fave newborn dipe. It definitely looks like one of the bigger newborn dipes.

You're def right - newborn dipes are SUPER easy to sell! It was like a race trying to be the one to buy them before they were all done.

My DD was super teeny - only 5lb 12 oz. I'm hoping this baby is a bit bigger, but both DH and I were 6 pounders and all our siblings were 7 or under. I just doubt I'm going to have a huge baby this time. I've been measuring ahead but I asked my midwife at my last appointment if that meant I was going to have a big baby this time and she said she could tell by feeling her that she's not going to be all that big.

aww what a teeny tiny peanut! your baby with be the perfect size for you :) That's what I keep trying to tell myself any way.. lol

i looooove swaddlebees/blueberry diapers!! they have been my favorite for a long time. they hold up really nicely and they are one of the few diapers i dont mind their aplix. it stays looking nice for a long time! good to know about the bg and thirsties xs aio's.  i did see that grovia had redesign their aio and i'm planning on getting a couple of the new ones. my only issue is their prints are not very cute for girls. which is a dumb issue.. lol they just seem to fit so nice on newborns and seem to fit for a decent amount of time so it seems like they would be a good option for sure!

I'm such a sucker for cute prints! I think that was why I liked Muttaquin fitteds so much - they're SOOO cute and she has SOO many prints. :-)

It has been a long time since I have used cloth diapers. Our youngest is 6, so I am having tons of fun putting a new stash together. I adore prefolds! Prefolds and wool are my favorite combo. The fun thing is, I saved all the wool longies my youngest two children wore, so this baby will get to wear them too. I cannot wait to dress this babe in wool hand knits! My babies all have come early and been small, so I am planning accordingly.

My NB stash is:

24 preemie prefolds

24 unbleached infant prefolds

3 kissaluvs size 0

2 preemie Cuddlebuns

3 pairs of preemie wool longies knit by me

2 NB Bummies Super Brite covers (I don't know if I will use these, but I have them)

I also have another pair of preemie longies on the needles that I need to finish.

longies are adorable! how fun that you get to use them again!! :) what do you love about prefolds? the absorbancy? the simplicity?

I could write an ode to prefolds! lol.gif I love how they look. I love how soft they are, especially the unbleached ones. I love how they don't leave elastic marks on sweet baby skin. I love how they look hanging up drying on the line. I love the simplicity. I love that they are natural fibers and when paired with wool, it is a breathable combination. Plus, they are useful for all sorts of other tasks too. I have stuffed them down my bra in the early engorged days to mop up my excess let down when nursing and used them for PP bleeding as well.

I think fitteds are super cute, and I have a few. The preemie Cuddlebuns are the cutest little things! But in the past I used prefolds about 98% of the time. I imagine I will with this wee one too.

those are all good points about prefolds- they were pretty much all i used with my boys. but i only had cheap crappy gerber prefolds and they really werent all that great. i did use them for multiple other things though. they are extremely handy to have around!!

I was dead set against prefolds when we first started almost 8 years ago. But my dd1 was built funny I guess because I couldn't get a good all over fit with any fitteds or AIOs. She did well with fuzzibunz stuffed with a prefolds. And she did great with prefolds and Bunnis super whisper wraps. I liked how easy it is to customize prefolds to fit the baby just right. We pretty much got our stash set with our first and are using it for all the rest. I got one bumgenius NB Aio for our little pumpkin. Mostly because it was orange. And the mama was willing to trade it for something I don't need. It's so soft and I would love to buy more, but doubt I will. We partly use sposies in the early days. I have s fuzzibunz and prefolds in each size along with BSWWs. I do have some kissaluvs size 0s. I almost forgot those.

I used mainly prefolds (bummis organic and they were fantastic) and a few fitteds (goodmama, EMB Bumboo). I think my total was a doz of the small prefolds (not the NB size) and a doz of the size up, and then 6 fitteds. I had about 5 covers (ME Airflow, Bummis superbrite, Thirsties sz 1, an aristocrat wool...) and really my stash was plenty. I really think 20-30 diapers if you have somebody who will help you do the wash every other day or if you think you'll be in good enough shape to do it yourself ;)

My daughter was born at 9lb 3 oz and was likely 12lb by her 6 week- is that possible? I don't remember! anyways by about 2 months I had added a few o/s pockets (BG3.0) and a few more fitteds and cute covers in girly prints (we went gender neutral at first) and then more and more pockets and a few others over time. I ended up off the prefolds all together when she was too wiggly to snappy well and when I saw how much easier pockets were! I don't really think I need any NB size dipes between how well the prefolds and 2 size or o/s fitteds worked for us and how big my daughter was.

That being said, I have bought about 30 now lol. Not all in NB but an assortment of NB, Small, sz 1s (of 2 size systems), on top of my slightly obsessive stash of mainly pockets but all kinds of others.
I have not purchased any lil joeys, but I did get a couple of chinese knock offs that are identical (but half the price) a few of the new swaddlebees, thirsties sz 1, sbish fitteds, blueberry, BGs (xs I think), sz sm charlie bananas, itti bitties, new and old style grovias, hmmm the list goes on... but they are primarily used though a handful of new. I am crazy about diapers, I'm the first to admit I have a problem. I hope that most of these will fit for a month or two and that at least they will make my life easier with two in diapers (though I think if I were to dedicate myself my 2yo would be PLd in no time). I know they will hold their value if nothing else lol the market here for NB dipes on the buy sell groups is insane, people start stocking up before they are even TTC.

you guys are convincing me to try prefolds again. I just couldn't get it right with DS and gave up on them and went to AIO's, pockets and OS's which worked well, but were huge on a newborn. I had the bummis whisper wraps before but really want to get a wool cover this time.

Thoughts on hemp vs bamboo vs cotton for the prefolds? I think I'll definitely pick up some bummi's

How many wool covers should I have in rotation? (I think I have 3 whisper wraps)

If they weren't homemade (my knitting skills aren't that good) how much did you pay? Was there a specific company you found the best? I'll get an Aristocrat one for sure, maybe more if they seem to be the best.

I'll definitely have some of my old stash of AIO's and some new ones to try (b/c diaper covers and different styles are so fun!)

i need to get shopping!

Springmum: I'm planning on half AIO and half fitted and some prefolds if we run out. I have 3 thirsties covers and 3 wool. One wool came free when I bought fitteds from a mama, but I got the other two off of Etsy. I found some great deals. I don't think I paid more than $15 for each of them. One is knitted and one is an upcycled sweater (but soooo soft!). I can't knit to save my life! Now if only I could figure out how to properly lanolize them. I did lanolize them already but I tested them out and I don't think I did it well enough (I put a wet tshirt inside and pressed and water came out of the cover).

Isitpuppies: Buying dipes can be a fun obsession, huh? I'm always tempted to get more. I just should start buying the one-sized - we have enough newborn! We have a full stash of one-sized but I think we might need a few more.

Yesterday I put all my newborn dipes into the hanging diaper holder I have. They still need to be washed, but I wanted to throw out the box they've been in. Anyway, they barely fit!! I was able to keep my DD's entire one-sized stash in this thing. I think I have way more newborn dipes than big dipes though since newborns go so often.

OK about the wool. My only real experience with wool is it is itchy.. Sooooo itchy.. Are these covers not??

Has anyone used fleece covers?? They seem so nice and soft for a newborn, but I'm getting mixed reviews on how well they work.

Amanda: The covers I've bought are so super soft. Like cashmere. And wool is supposed to be really breathable. I've heard fleece doesn't hold moisture as well - but I'm not sure - I've never tried either!

There are a bunch of newborn dipes up for sale at Muttaqin Baby right now. They go so fast!! I so don't need anymore but I'm really tempted to buy some. The fabrics are too cute. I know my 3 yr old would love a Tinkerbell diaper on her sister!

I love nb cd!

I tend to have bigger babies that grow super fast (like a lb a week in the beginning and then 20 lbs by 4 mos) so most of my dipes reflect that...though I did end up getting some smaller ones just in case...

I have:

1 dz. osocozy preemie pfs

1 dz xs imagine ubpf

1dz LL infant pf

1 dz sm imagine ub pf

6 nb workhorse fitteds

3 xs sandys fitteds

7 aios (4 simplex, 1 grovia, 1 lil joey, 1 bgxs)  woul like more aio's and plan on either kissaluvs or simplex...they both have a higher weight range and GREAT reviews.

4 dappi nb covers pullon

1 prorap sm

2 thirsties duo sz1

1 imagine nb cover

1 baby beehinds sm (this is my largest sm cover, lol)

2 bummis super lite sm

I also want to try the bummis original in colors...

So it's a really random stash...I originally had it streamlined on paper and then started buying...then second guessed myself on baby's size (we'll see soon!).

I love pfs in the nb stage!  so easy if you get the jellyroll down.  But I want more aios for out and about...and...lol.
