Anyone have experience with getting rid of a hornet's nest (on our house, conveniently located right next to our main door)? Without poison? Or is that the only way to go?

I once came home from vacation to a paper nest the size of a basketball! I could get a line of sight from a back window, so I dragged the hose up there, went inside, reached out a barely open window with one hand and gave them the power jet spray of our hose. it tore the nest apart to shreds and they dispersed.
Might have been better ways, but it worked for me.Thanks for that. It helped convince my husband that the hose will do the same thing as the spray without poisoning us all.
And it worked... The weird thing is that even though I saw a wasp or two (thought they were hornets but DH says wasps) around the nest, none were in there. After the water stopped dripping and we were able to see the aftermath, there were lots of black spiders all over the ground. DH wasn't sure if he saw a wasp fly out of the nest or not, but why would there be all these drowned spiders on our patio?? Very strange. And I feel bad for the spiders, and would have handled it differently if I'd had any reason to think it was a spider nest instead of flying, stinging, scary things.
