I think I am in preterm labor...

Ok so around 2 this afternoon I sort of fell on my back. I prefer to call it a tumble rather than fall because it wasn't like my legs were ripped out from under me. No where near that dramatic. I just had a slip and tumble in the bathroom and landed on my back. I was not at all injured although it did knock the wind out of me. Everything was fine. I sat there for a minute waiting to catch my breath but I wasn't in any pain. About 30 minutes later the contractions began. So I am going on about 7 hours of contractions now. At times they hurt more and times they hurt less. Sometimes they are 5 minutes apart and sometimes they are 15 minutes apart. I had about a 30 minute period during all this they totally stopped and I thought I was in the clear, but they suddenly started up again.

To me this feels like labor. Not great news since I am 33/3. Not in the safe zone to give birth for at least 3 more weeks. But I am really hanging onto hope this is false labor because DH is away until saturday and I just can't go to L&D with all my kids. I don't know a single soul here. We moved to Fort Bragg less than a year ago and I got pregnant so quickly that socializing was just not a priority. And to top it off I am supposed to be at the airport an hour away on thursday to pick up one of my kiddos who took an unaccompanied flight home from visitation with his dad. He's 10! No way could I not show up labor or not.

Can false labor cause contractions for this long? Should I go in. Well I know I should but is it totally irresponsible for me not to go in? Two of my children aren't even school aged yet so it is going to be hell taking them in the middle of the night to sit in a cold hospital room where I am sure the nurses aren't going to be very nice to them and they are going to be tired and cranky.

Any advice?

Have you tried the drink water and lie on your left side trick? If they're still going after that, you really need to go. They can stop labor and keep baby baking safely. Is there anyone in your DH's command that can help? Some sort of base services folks?  Please don't risk complications for you and baby because you don't have childcare!!

About the only thing you can do to stop the contractions is relax and make sure you're not dehydrated. If you won't be able to relax due to worrying about all the logistics involved, you should just go in. I have two small ones, so I don't make that suggestion lightly. If you think you really can take a chance at relaxing, take a bath. If that doesn't make the contractions go away, then *really* go to the hospital. It would be easier on little kids to be dragged by you to the emergency room then for EMTs to have to get them up and into an ambulance with you if you wait so long that you can't safely drive.

I fell asleep lastnight within minutes of writing that post and woke up this morning relieved NO CONTRACTIONS!!!! I was very excited. Since then I have felt a few Braxton Hicks but these feel like the normal stuff I would get on any other day. I may or may not schedule an OB, but for now I'm feeling pretty good about the situation. I'm just going to continue to take it easy and if they start again I am just going to head into L&D to stop things. I'm a little better prepared for the situation now. All the kids have a packed bag of snacks, toys, and extra clothes on stand by.

If you need anything, I'm in Chapel Hill and very familiar with Fayetteville. I also know some people down there I can connect you with, including someone due close to your due date, a doula, a homebirthing mom with 4 kids, and/or LLL Leaders (I lived there for 4 years and was very involved in the birthing/breastfeeding community).

Also, if you want a natural birth, there are things you should know about Womack.
