Just thought I'd share, as my MW suggested this tip and it's been working for me. Might be coincidental (like it was going to get better anyway), but I've seen a big improvement.
I have had pretty yucky constipation since 6 weeks or so (I'm almost 12 weeks). TMI: Pre-pregnancy, I used to go maybe 3x/day, say, Z amount. Well, I was down to 0-1x/day (occasionally 2x/day), about 1/4 Z each time, hard, small, etc. I felt bloated and by the end of the day, my lower belly stuck out-- way before I was showing (this is basically my first PG). I called it my "poop baby." Neither colace nor loading up on fiber made much difference.
My MW explained how PG hormones cause your smooth/involuntary muscles to relax, so that you won't lose the baby to uterine contractions and whatnot. So you really don't want to increase motility. But what else is there? She swore up and down that taking a capsule of flaxseed oil (I'm doing 1000 mg) with every meal would help "lubricate" things. I was skeptical, but it is totally working! I now reliably go 2x/day and manage maybe 1/2-3/4 of Z amount each time.
So basically, I'm about halfway between my pre-pregnancy regularity and my early pregnancy constipation-- but man, I will take it!
Just thought I'd pass that along to anyone who could use it!
