Paleo Pregnancy - Chat and Tips and Tricks

Let's have a designated place to chat and share what's working for us as far as suppressing ms and whatnot.

So far I have found that putting a couple small drops of spearmint essentials oil on my pillow at night keeps the queasiness away and helps me sleep soundly. It's a pleasant smell and it even gets in my hair a bit so I get hints of it until I shower for the day.

Another life saver has been sweet potatoes. I'm currently doing a Whole30 (http://whole9life.com/category/whole-30/) and even with my slight MS I've been able to stay on track. I have had moments where it's gotten hairy and I have saved myself by making some sweet potato fries and homemade paleo mayo. Within minutes of eating them I feel alive again.

What's helping you? How are you feeling? Any staples?

Excuse the group crash post.  innocent.gif I've been considering the Whole30 as a diet to get myself back to good eating habits. Thanks for the tips.

This is the one that I use: http://www.theclothesmakethegirl.com/2010/06/03/the-secret-to-homemade-mayo-patience/ It's really important to let everything come to room temp together. It made all the difference the last time I made it. Very good!

I am so glad to hear spearmint oil works for ms.  I made a tincture this past summer!!!

I'm glad the mayo and sweet potatoes help.  We make fries at least once a week.  So far I've just been drinking peppermint tea with a little raspberry leaf in it for when I feel nauseous.  I'm going to try the spearmint oil tonight.thumb.gif

Hi All!  Just found out I am pregnant and this will be my first paleo pregnancy.  I am hopeful and excited to see if this time around will be different.   I will definitely try the spearmint oil on my pillow. Any other tips!?!  Anyone go back to some grains early on for MS?  I don't know what else to think of besides rice crackers to help in the a.m.  Maybe nuts/dried fruit? MS was awful the first time around, but I have to wonder if it was because my GI system was so screwed from eating grains and fingers crossed it wont be that way this time.

Also, I am worried because first pregnancy I could not even stomach the sight of meat protein until about my 4th month!

Congrats Jill!

I had some severe meat aversions in the 1st trimester that left me eating whatever I could stomach. It's been hard for me to get back on course completely but I do feel so much better when I do. I plan to get back into a Whole30 mode after the holidays have passed. My advice to you is to just keep trying different things and different preparations when you find an aversion. And if you find something you can handle, hopefully you can deal with eating that a whole lot in that first few months.

So far I have already indulged in rice, corn chips, white potatoes and a bagel. Chicken on the bone mskes me want to vomit. but so far other protiens are ok (especially anything mexican style). I am going to try to not beat myself up over it but I really don't feel good after eating grains ie indigestion/bloating even though I'm satisfied.

I just tried to survive in the beginning so I ate what I could stomach. I didn't worry about it too much either.

I had a meat aversion during the first trimester as well, and sometimes I still feel it, but not as bad.

And strong cravings for rice crackers, triscuits, etc.

I wonder why that was...

I have had made some quinua and have been eating some tortilla's and bagels made with tapioca flour. Against the Grain is the brand, I think its pretty new.  I can't eat any gluten because I'm a celiac, but these alternatives have been wonderful.  Fried eggs are a go to protein too.  Love them, can't stomach scrambled eggs, but fried eggs are so yummy.

Can I post?

Due in April and have recently developed MAJOR meat aversions.  It's horrible. I can't eat gluten or dairy either (well, can't eat gluten and shouldn't eat dairy, I've been eating dairy just for the fat and protein)

On the plus side, I did eat a whole package of bacon earlier today....that went down easily for some reason....a beautiful marriage of fat and protein.  By the time lunch came around, though I was gagging at the smell of cooking meat.

Oh no! Meat aversions this far in have got to suck. I had them early on but thankfully haven't had too many issues as of lately. I hope it passed for you!

It's better today.  Just got done with lunch which consisted of meat with a side of meat. 3 hamburger patties with jalepeno jack cheese with a side of bacon.  Does it get any better?  LOL

Oh, I'm so happy to see this convo! I'm 24 weeks pregnant and on day 19 of the whole30.

During the first tri I could hardly stomach any meat. Yuck. When I started feeling better around 15 weeks I was able to get back to eating mostly paleo and after tgiving and Christmas I decided I really needed to reset my eating habits, so I started w30.

I can't eat sweet potatoes, they make me so nauseous.  irked.gif  I'm now eating regular potatoes because I need some kind of carb.  It's a bummer.

What are you all doing for carbohydrates? I am at a loss right now as it stands. I eat meat at night mostly and find it doesn't bother me but have no interest in greens (unless they are just cut fresh...and in New England, it's not exactly easy in winter). Nothing has made/is making me nauseous which I feel very fortunate for. I had been paleo for about a year when I got pregnant and was doing the GAPS diet and the SCD diet before that. But I do hardly any carbs. Carrots even bother me at times. I should probably fry up some turnips, beets and parsnips in lard...that might do the trick. But I'm feeling "unsatisfied" today and really have little interest in anything. Usually when I get like this something "jumps" out at me. I suspect that there is autoimmune going on but not sure. I have been sticking pretty close to paleo with a little butter and over Christmas cheese. But the cheese started bothering me and now I'm having sleep issues and horrible dreams so I suspect the butter...

Anyone do plantains? I don't do well with sweets. I do a lot of squash and turnips. And meat always tastes wonderful to me at night as long as it isn't ground (I go back and forth with that). OH! And I'm doing a coconut kefir smoothie with egg yolks, chicken liver, a touch of maple syrup and raspberries every morning.

Also, what are you doing for your calcium? I can't take vitamins...we don't co-mingle well.

And it's snowing! I'm tired of being cold...I want my internal "fire" to kick in. With baby 1 I was a hot cake...and I was raw vegan?! It's probably because half the stuff I was eating aggravates both him and I ;-)

Hi all!  We live a paleo lifestyle as well and this is my first pregnancy living like this.  What has everyone's weight gain been like?  I usually gain a ton of weight and so far at almost 17 weeks I have only gained 2 lbs.  I eat when Im hungry but there just isn't that bad food in the house for me to eat anymore.  Lots of veggies to eat and an occasional piece of fruit.  :)

Hi there! I gained over 40 pounds my last pregnancy (I was raw vegan). I also had a lot of pain (sciatica and unhappy baby kicking my ribs out). This time around I'm over the 20 week mark and have put on a bit over 10. Over the holidays I was eating rice pasta's though (stress induced) and dairy (raw). I have cut the pasta out completely and do dairy very occasionally (if I feel like I need it). I was paleo a year or so before this pregnancy and I was WAPF/GAPS/SCD before that. I also nursed up until my body decided to quit it with this pregnancy. So I was at about my ideal weight. I am pretty sure most of my weight has been strictly baby weight as I'm measuring a few cm larger then my week (almost 23 weeks, 28 cm or so). Hope that helps!
