41) "Chomp" by Carl Hiaasen. A read aloud with my kids. I think this is my favorite Hiaasen book so far.

Holy Moly, it's almost the end of August.  I have a ton of books to post.  But I gotta do a quickie, b/c I'm slammed at the office.

#29 The Sisters Brothers by Patrick DeWitt

Really fun western about two hired killers in the wild west of Oregon and California

#30 Fifty Shades Darker by E.L. James

More of the same, kind of like reading a tabloid magazine.  Not very well written, but kind of fun just the same.

#31 The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander

Very sobering and enraging research and examination of how the War on Crime and the War on Drugs are the new Jim Crow. 

#32 Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman

Fun urban fantasy (would you call his stuff that? he's sort of beyond genres...?) about a whole world under London.

#33 The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

Memoir about an adverse and neglectful childhood.  She's a great writer, so despite the horrible neglect she and her siblings were subjected to, it was quite a good read. 

#34 The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach

Fabulous book.  I would recommend this to everyone.  It's sort of about baseball, but mostly about life.

#35 By the Shores of Silver Lake by Laura Ingalls Wilder

We're slowing down on this series.  Dd was super into it, but she's onto Harry Potter now.  We'll see if we get to the rest of the stories.

#36 A Monstrous Regiment of Women by Laurie R. King

Love these books.  Mystery with Sherlock Holmes and his young friend Mary Russell.

#37 In Zanesville by Jo Ann Beard

Enh.  Was okay coming of age novel about a middle school girl in the midwest.

HI!  I just got a few books from the library today. We are right back where we started 4 months ago but my library card is working again!  I can't wait to start reading.  Kiddo is elated as well.  He has an entire stack of DVD's waiting for him as well as books!

I know it sounds strange to most people but I think you ladies will understand - the library is our sense of community. For kiddo and me, even when we moved across country for the summer, getting registered with the new library system was one of the very first things we did.  Having that certain 'tie' to the city was very important. Being able to access materials, being able to read, watch DVD's,  attend programs is the core of what my little family is about.  Even in this age of electronic resources - E Readers, I Pads, Laptops etc, the library is still the place we both turn to first.

To be able to wander the shelves, to just left myself 'go' in the library is so freeing at times.  I can't get that sense of freedom or passion anywhere else, not at the bookstore, not online browsing,  strange huh?

I can relate to that for sure!  We LOVE the library!  Unfort. our library is on their annual furlough right now, due to budget cuts.  But, the library levy passed during the last vote, and no furloughs next year!

Have you read Half Broke Horses also by Jeannette Walls? It's the story of her grandmother, Lily Casey. I loved both books and would like to see more from her.

I actually read that one first!  Both really good books. I would love to read more by her too.  Hope she keeps writing!
