help me make an awesome homeschool room!

I am going to be using a very small bedroom for our homeschool room and want to make it really great and usable. I know that the world is our homeschool room, but I want a place to keep things organized and have a chalk board etc. The small art table and chairs will be in there too.

So, post your favorite photos of your space, or just give me ideas. We tend to like Waldorf inspired classrooms, especially since. Dd1 is only 4.

I don't have much $$$$ for the project, so the close to free, the better.

Thanks

My advice would be to focus more on storage solutions and less on workspace. That's because my kids m even the really introverted ones, have always wanted to work in the flow of household life. They didn't want me hovering over them, but they didn't want to be alone either. They wanted me to be puttering around doing things of my own, but within conversational distance, so that they felt they were part of my world and I was part of theirs. This was all the more true if there was a sibling around. We built little cubby desks for our kids in the family room off the side of the living room, but they rarely got used because they preferred to work at the breakfast nook, or on the living room couch.

And I would think this would be especially the case when the room was small and separate from any common open areas in the house.

The one exception is that my kids love a quiet, cozy place apart from others to read. My younger dd has a beanbag chair in the corner of her bedroom with a princess-type (or mosquito-net) canopy (really just a pair of thrift store sheer curtains hung from a circular fiberglass rod) to enclose the space and some hanging LED string lights behind for soft illumination. She loves this space, and it has definitely enticed her to get well-nigh addicted to reading.

I have to agree with Moomin about where kids like to be - which is wherever you are. I was excited when DD was little to set up a room, too, and it was lots of fun to plan and decorate, but we always ended up at the kitchen table or the living room floor. It would be good to have a place where the materials are organized and accessible, though.

I would say as many bookshelves as you can get in there the better.  And I would go with wider ones that you can put storage bins on.  I would imagine I am not the only one who has ended up with an amazing amount of books and educational magazines and art supplies and an ant hill and a butterfly deal.....

I have contemplated setting up a special area for school- but our dining room works pretty good for us.  I have a very large shelf and drawer combo in there that I have the books we are currently using and our supplies....  I would like it to look nice and am trying to work on that this week.  I can't handle how cluttered everything there is.  Anyway- I am thinking that each kid needs a bin/basket for their stuff on it.  I think if we had a separate room we would be less inclined to pick things up at the end of the day and then things would get misplaced- which it is hard to do math if your math book is missing and ends up in the toy box...  You may be much more rigid in things than I am though :)

Very inspiring :) I love the idea of a comfy couch for snuggling up to read together.
