It was really neat. It was my first "spectator" birth lol. I've had 2 of my own and remember them distinctly. Now in for #3.
When I had my HB with DS2 the midwives were getting concerned when it took me 10 min to push baby out and at the 20 min mark still no placenta. They gave me a pit shot to make it happen - oh fun.
When they were trying to "help" it along before it definitely hurt. Before they really got it out they gave her a saddle block (aka epidural) so she wouldn't feel it. That was definitely the right way to go. Didn't really affect her at all. Just made her comfy which is great because she was really swollen after pushing for 3 hours!
Moms used to die from placental infection if it stayed in or even a piece did (not trying to scare anyone here!) Also, if a small piece is left in, you have the potential to continuously bleed for an insanely long period of time. Not cool.
Now she has a higher chance of that happening again with subsequent pregnancies, so she knows that and will continue having un-medicated births with slight meds for afters
Tiqa no worries! It's a great place to discuss these sorts of things. All of our births are so unique and different, even from kid to kid! It's nice hearing about what other people go through - not the horror stories mind you
