Cravings!

I'm pretty sure most, if not all of us, are feeling better at this point... which means cravings might be picking up for some of us. I thought it might be kind of fun to have a thread where we post all of the funny, weird and gross things we are craving.  :)

Cravings are a semi-new thing for me as I didn't have many cravings with my other two pregnancies other than red meat.

So far my only craving is pimento stuffed olives. I can not get enough of them.

What are you craving?!

I can't get enough of the grilled-cheese and tomato sandwiches from Fit For Life. I have to pass by them every morning on my way to my office, and the smell is overwhelming. I stop way more often then I should, they've even given me a frequent flyer coupon!!! Sheepish.gif

Ugh why did you say grilled cheese and tomato soup?!??!?!?!  I had successfully forgotten about that until just now, and I think I have to have it for lunch!  Gluten free bread and sharp cheddar and tomato soup all happen to be in my fridge at this very moment...

LOL! That's been my downfall this pregnancy! I can't eat gluten and that GF bread is EXPENSIVE!

I make some killer almond bread and gf bread. There are great mixes from Pamela's as well as Bob's red mill that cuts down a lot on costs!

cheese- grilled cheese and tomatos or apples.  and apples. and cheese!  I was vegan before my son for a couple years but ever since eat whatever I want (still vegetarian though.)  I was so skinny with him I just didn't care what I ate as long as it stayed down!

I was vegetarian for twelve years and this pregnancy I want meat!  I'm pretty into cheeseburgers lately.  Thankfully we have at least four places close by that offer local, hormone/antibiotic free meat and where at first I was kinda freaked out about it but eating some for the protein and iron, lately it's like this primal NEED to have it.  Really crazy to experience that after not having meat for so long.  Other than that, I crave fresh fruit like watermelon, crisp plums, juicy peaches, apples, etc.  Also tomatoes.  I have literally eaten up to seven sliced heirloom tomatoes, with salt, in a day.  And now I want some tomatoes....

That is so strange...I am loving tomatoes right now too...just can't seem to get enough!  I have been eating them sliced with a bit of salt and pepper...yum yum yum!  Luckily my mom has a huge garden and her tomatoes are all ripening so I have all the free organic tomatoes I can eat at my disposal!

Oh!  I have been going through a tomato kick as well... the in-season local tomatoes are so unbelievably good.  Unfortunately, they also give me heartburn, but I still can't resist...

I have been loving humus, Cesar dressing, meat, tomato and cheese with olive oil, salt, pepper, oregano and sometimes basil or parsley. Yum!!!

Luckily I've been craving fruits and nuts, and we always have plenty on hand.  The season is winding down now, though, so I'm kind of worried when my plums and peaches are gone from the fruit stands.  Grapefruit is feeling good too, as are bananas.  And anything with cinammon!

I finally have a new craving. Mushrooms! So good sauteed in butter and garlic.

Jen-  You must try this.  Cut up french bread into 1 inch cubes, toss in olive oil, salt, pepper and thyme and toast in a hot oven.  Meanwhile, saute garlic and shiitake, crimini, oyster or whatever wild mushrooms you have in butter.  Whisk together a couple eggs, heavy cream, salt, pepper and more thyme and add to mushroom/garlic mix.  Toss in toasted bread cubes and let sit for at least ten minutes.  Grease individual ceramic tins or one larger casserole dish before adding mushroom bread pudding, bake until golden on top.  Make sure to use plenty of garlic, herbs, and cream. :)  This is SO good!  Best mushroom dish I've ever made and a huge hit in my family. If you decide to make some and need more exact measurements, let me know and I'll actually get out the recipe for you.  Amazing.  If you're more into rosemary or sage feel free to add or substitute.  Either way you'll have a delicious, melty, earthy, savory bread pudding.

Almost forgot... grate some good hard cheese on top.. Parmesan, asiago, whatever.  And thanks for reminding me of this... I have shiitakes in the fridge and I'll be making this dish tomorrow!

Oh man... that sounds really good. Too bad I can't eat grains or dairy right now. Both times I've had either of those this pregnancy I've puked my guts out.

I'm having cravings lately for milk - too bad I throw it up immediately when I try.

Also VERY spicy stuff - which oddly enough, stays down just fine.  Go figure.

Jalapenos!!!

Mexican food and tomatoes...my friend made this rice gratin with zucchini and roasted tomatoes that rocked my world recipe on smitten kitchen  but we do no have an oven right now so I am seriously counted the days til I can cook all day, which is pretty awesome because usually in pregnancy I get sick of cooking, now I can't wait to make sauce, soups, bread, muffins, tacos!  can't wait...tonight I am cooking red sauce with italian sausages in their and pasta with greens..I am also really trying to focus on greens right now before the blood doubling that occurs in the next few weeks.  ugg so much work this eating thing!
