Painful penis...what can I put on it?

Thread Starter

My 3 1/2 year old uncirc son, came up to me yesterday and had retraced his foreskin to "show me his pee hole."  This is the first time he as ever been retracted unless he had done it before and I didn't witness it.  He said it hurt and the head of his penis right at the urethra was definitely red.  It may be from the bubble bath he took a few days ago (something else we have never really done.)  He showed it to me again today and it is still read.  Is there something I can put on it to help it heal.  I have been reluctant to put anything inside there.  For my daughters I always used zinc oxide cream for healing but very unsure what to do.  So hard to find information about intact care.  I looked online and found lots of things criticizing leaving boys intact.  I knew I could come here and get good non -judgmental information.

While I am asking a question, I feel like he sometimes smells like urine.  I think it is from having a few drops still in his foreskin and them dripping out after he pulls up his pants.  I have tried to teach him to wipe but if I am not there supervising I am sure he does not.  Is that something you would worry about?

TIA

Keeping in mind that the normal color of the intact glans is a bright red/purple color and the urethral opening is often a bit darker in general. It could be that he is starting the separation process which can cause a bit of discomfort. Adding a barrier cream like you did with your dd's is fine and may help sooth things. I would let him do the retracting and dab the cream on what you see. Even if it dosnt help much it wiont hurt a thing either.
