Please participate in survey: Forum influence on attitude towards breastfeeding

Hello,

I would like to ask for your help by participating in a survey.

I am currently completing a master's degree and as part of my thesis I look at the influence of mothering/breastfeeding forums and how they can affect attitudes towards breastfeeding.

The survey is fairly short and answering should only take a couple of minutes.

Please follow this link to participate: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/8VM3H6F

Thank you in advance for your time!

I have posted this request in the following Forums:

I just filled it out. I am American living in Germany for 10 years and became a mother here. I find the topic of your research interesting. Compared to some of the stories I hear on this forum and from my American mama friends, Germany is much more breastfeeding-friendly than the US. Still, the average length of BFing here is pathetically short (I think the vast majority are not still exclusively BFing by age 4 or 6 months). I think the general attitude Germans have towards the human body (that it is just fine and ok to be naked) make a huge difference, whereas in the US people are very prude and always associate any form of exposure or nudity with sex. I have never once felt uncomfortable nursing in public here, but on my visits to the US I always had to be careful where I nursed when we were out and about. In any case once you get into toddler nursing (as we are, my son is 27 months) it is pretty much the same in both cultures: not acceptable and considered weird. I do not tell anyone except close friends who I know are supportive we are still nursing.

Good luck with the rest of your research!

P.J., thanks for sharing that.

It is definitely a most interesting topic. And yes, the comfort most people have with their bodies is one of the benefits of living here. Some of my "American but living in Germany" friends have started wearing bikinis again, which apparently some hadn't done in the States since their college days.

I was raised in the USA and live in Denmark, and have seen both extremes. Any extreme is unhealthy. It is extreme to get no support and be pressured to use formula in the USA. But it is also an extreme to get no access AT ALL to formula in the hospital, when really needed, until your baby gets so dehydrated that they pee salt due to kidney failure. Try looking at your own newborn with a red diaper and not get upset. Extremes in any direction are never healthy.
