Who is planning on Cloth Diapering? - Page 5

Hmmm... I used flats with a pul cover and a fleece/hemp insert - didn't take any more time to dry than regular clothes and they never smelled bad... maybe it was chafing after all, and not my front-loading washer.  My downstairs neighbour used the same washer and she didn't have any problems with cloth for her baby (who wasn't nearly as wiggly and running around as mine - hers didn't crawl much and didn't walk until she was 17 months or so... it's wrong to be jealous of that, I know, but...)

EDIT: I should say MOST of my dipes were flats with covers and inserts - I also had 3 fuzzibunz type dipes that got rotated in, but they used the inserts too and were also quick to wash & dry and not stinky.  My sister, who DOES definitely have issues with her front-loading washer, uses fuzzibunz and AIOs.  She was happy to play with my ancient washer when she came to visit - I think they did something like 7 loads of laundry over the 5 days they were here, LOL...

I have to be okay with this!

My MIL came over yesterday so we could go do some shopping for my up coming baby shower she is throwing. While she was here, she told me one of DP's aunts called her after getting the invitation (on my invites I clearly stated "NO DISPOSABLE DIAPERS", and also said there was a prize drawing for anyone that got us a cloth diaper from the registry). Okay, let me back up a tiny bit and say, that when I announced we were having a girl on facebook, this aunt responded by saying "I am going to make a HUGE diaper cake!" I told DP what she posted, and we both groaned over it. Than we told MIL that she would need to handle the aunt, and make sure she doesn't make a diaper cake. Like, what in the world am I going to do with all those disposables!?

Okay, so back to yesterday. MIL says this aunt called her and said that she was going to make a diaper cake out of prefolds (also, she apparently told MIL that she had talked to me about it already... Ummm, nope, I never talked to her about any of this  headscratch.gif...) So, alright, she's spending money on prefolds just so she can do a stupid diaper cake. UGH!! Now, I know a lot of you use prefolds, I personally never have, I've always used AIO's, and a few Kissaluvs with longies for night time. DP asked me what we would do with all those prefolds, and I very snarkily said "polish the cars?"

But in all reality, this should not be a bad thing, right? You guys use prefolds, and I have read on this thread, more than once, that some of you adore them. Am I really that spoiled? I could be, I think actually I might be, because I cannot seem to get my head around having 4 dozen prefolds and not know what to do with them all! I seriously wish she would spend the same amount of money and get us two of the AIO's I have on our registry.

Oh poop... I really need to be okay with this! All I need is some covers and snappies right?

I do find it odd that she claims she talked to you about it and didn't.

I do enjoy prefolds especially for the first few month, but that does not you will or even should have to.

If you have any experience sewing maybe you could make some or all of them into pretty burp cloths.  Keep some and give some away.  Here is a blog that has what I am talking about on it. http://www.petitelemon.com/blog/2011/03/28/how-to-make-a-burp-cloth/

I'm a big fan of prefolds for burp cloths too, especially since all of my babies are super-spitters and droolers. Keep some, gift some, sell the rest on craigslist or something. Try a few of them out, you might love them, but if not, new prefolds have decent resell value, so no harm done. I'd rather get a bunch of prefolds then a cake made out of disposables since you can't really do much with them besides give them away.

You could use the prefolds to stuff pocket diapers? I know you said you like AIOs though - I'm just trying to think of a use for them. Let's see, in addition to burp cloths, here are some other uses that I can think of:

  • lay under the baby during diaper changes
  • throw in the diaper bag to use as a changing pad on the go
  • take to the park to wipe rain off the playground equipment so the kiddo's bottom stays dry
  • newborn size make a good doubler for extra absorbency in any diaper
  • newborn size also makes a good postpartum pad
  • makes a handy "piddle pad" to throw on the floor under baby during potty training. same goes for EC.
  • lay one under baby's head while she sleeps if she's a spitter
  • while breastfeeding, stick one in your nursing bra on the side that baby isn't nursing from to catch leaky milk

I mean, ANY old rag, t shirt, towel, etc could be used for this stuff. it's not like it has to be a prefold. But if you have a few laying around they may come in handy for things like this?

But in all honesty, I'd personally sell them if I wasn't planning on using them as diapers. Maybe I'd keep 6 around for uses mentioned above, if I really didn't have anything else to use for those purposes that I liked better.

Thanks so much for all the ideas! I knew it wasn't that bad, I just needed time to think about it, prefolds have many good uses. And who knows, maybe I'll end up liking them with a cute cover!

I got a snappy, used it a few times, and then discovered that I could just fold the prefold into the cover and go. If you're crafty, or know someone who is, there are at least one or two tutorials out there on how to turn prefolds into fitteds, too.
