I wanted to start a new thread to see if anyone has ever heard of this..
I have been swimming my whole life without any issues. I used to be a life-guard and teach swimming lessons in college and even worked at the Y for 2 years as a swim instructor so I was in the water 40 hours a week.
During my second pregnancy, I began taking my 3 yr old DD to our gym to teach her to swim. After I got out of the pool, I noticed (about 5-10 minutes later) that I had hives on my arms, belly, back and legs and felt very itchy. I wasn't sure if it was from my new maternity bathing suit or the chlorine or just a hormonal thing from being pregnant...it happened again the next 4 or 5 times I went, but I noticed it wasn't as bad if I showered immediately after, so I thought it was a reaction to the chlorine. Since then, I have had my second child and am 8 weeks postpartum. Last week I swam in our town pool and did not shower (I actually totally forgot that I had been getting hives) and when I got home, I was COVERED in them and had a "sun-burn" like rash on my chest...scary!! A few days ago I swam in my aunt's 4 foot pool and DID not shower to see if it would happen again and it did, but it was not as bad. So again, I figured it was a reaction to the chlorine.
Today I went swimming in a lake and got some hives on my stomach! Again, not nearly as bad, but still there. So I guess it is not the chlorine after all, and after looking on-line I think it may have to do with "cold urticaria"?
Also, I am breastfeeding so I know my hormones are different, but this did not happen with my first child and I am pretty sure I went swimming postpartum with her.
I have my annual physical coming up next month so I plan to ask her, but has anyone experienced this?
