Last Friday morning I was in a minor car accident. It was a side impact, airbags did not inflate, car is still drivable, and I had no injuries. I called my OB's office and they told me that as long as I'm not bleeding or cramping they don't need to see me.
13 hours later I started having the faintest bit of brown spotting. I had a panic moment and went to the ER. They performed an internal exam, blood test, and ultrasound. The internal exam showed just a little more brown discharge, and the ultrasound looked happy as can be. Baby was bouncing around and heart was beating strong. I was not experiencing any pain or cramping.
Just as they were about to discharge me I noticed some red spotting. My heart fell into my stomach, but they still discharged me with some advice on what to do if the bleeding got worse. The light spotting continued on for about two days and disappeared on Monday. Still no pain or cramping, so I schedule a follow up appointment with my OB for Wednesday.
I saw my OB on Wednesday, and heard the baby's heartbeat nice and strong. OB did another internal exam just to see if anything is left in there. She took a look and said my cervical mucus looks great, but when she did the manual exam there's quite a bit of red blood. She took another look with a speculum and noticed that it's just the surface of my cervix bleeding, and nothing else. She concluded I have a friable cervix, even though I have no polyps, no history of abnormal pap smears, and no stds.
She swabbed out all the blood from the internal exam so I've had no spotting since that appointment. My partner and I have been told that vaginal penetration during sex is an absolute NO during this pregnancy, but we can be creative in other ways. We are both really glad we found out in a doctors office and NOT while in bed together. How traumatizing might that be!
