I don't remember the full history off the top of my head but there was a deaf colony on Martha's Vineyard and they wanted to learn a more formal signing language so they sent to England for help and were rebuffed. A guy from France was willing to come start a school (Gallaudet was his name) so we followed what he knew. The UK signing language uses two hands for each letter whereas French/ASL uses one hand for each letter. That makes for a neat difference in learning. I've tried to learn both but I am having a hard time.
