Does anyone have experience with ONA or ONH (optic nerve damage resulting in partial/blindness)? ...

So our DD is just over 2 and a half (3 in December) and we always knew her left eye looked a little different but we never felt alarmed.  She's never had any coordination issues or anything, always has functioned at 100%.  Anyways, we brought her in, saw a specialist and they told us her optic nerve is badly damaged.  Now through the confusion of learning this we forgot to ask what this is called but looked it up on the web and it appears to be ONA or ONH.  We are waiting for another appointment as the Optomologyst has referred us to a retna specialist.  There were two physicians at this appointment and they both assured us that she is perfectly healthy and will lead a normal life, that there is absolutely no threat to the right eye.  He does however want the retna specialist to confirm his findings as well they want to order some potential blood work.  I asked why and he said to rule out any infections that might have caused this.  I had a perfectly healthy pregnancy, drug free home birth and she has never had any illness all her life.  He had asked if there were cats or dogs in the house when she was an infant, no there wasnt, we only got a dog about 6 months ago but he said that wouldn't count.  I asked if there was something about dogs or cats that can cause this and he said in rare cases there has been associations.

What does that mean?  And why do they want to order blood work?  The thing that concerns me about the ON "H" is that the H one is associated with other brain abnormalities.

Does anyone have any experience with this?  I would love to hear some stories.

Thanks for any information.
